Wareham couple travels cross-country on Route 6
By Mindy Shearer, Staff Reporter Brian and Joan Churchill of Wareham, Massachusetts visited Nappanee Friday, May 12 after spending the night in Bremen the night before. Nappanee was one of their many stops during their cross-country travel along U.S. 6. The Churchills started their journey in April from Provincetown, Massachusetts, and have already traveled through Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Stopping in different towns along the way, the Churchills would like to get to know the people who live, work and play along this road. They want to know why and how people live in these certain towns, what their hobbies are, and to understand the differences in politics, religion, culture and ethnic makeup of the people they meet. But most importantly, they want to hear about their dreams for the future. To keep their focus on their journey on Route 6, they are trying not to stray but two miles away from the highway, except for special occasions, and if time permits, their goal is to travel at least 50 miles per day. They will travel past Bishop, California to Long Beach, which was Route 6’s end point from 1938 to 1964, when its reputation was the longest highway in the country. The Churchills must be back home by July 1 in order for Mr. Churchill to resume his job as director of technology services at Massachusetts Maritime Academy

More than 50 Indiana high school yearbooks entered the IHSPA critique service in 2000. These books were sent to out-of-state judges who provided the initial feedback and overall ranking. Those publications earning marks of “Superior” or Excellent” by the first judges were sent to a second local judge who determined the Hoosier Stars. Present scholarships Amy Vanlaningham, Milford, died from a Haitian bullet on May 22, 1984, at age 25. She was completing her nurse’s degree at Goshen College, and had been assigned to Haiti for her study-service trimester. She was returning to her Haitian guest home after having attended an evening Goshen College student meeting when she was shot. Amy was a committed Christian planning to nurse and assist the poor. She was the type of young lady who every community and church would be proud to claim. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hazel Vanlaningham, 1644 E. Mock Rd., Milford, established a scholarship at Goshen College for nursing students, in Amy’s memory. The scholarship is given annually to at least one, and sometimes two, older students who are returning to college to complete their nursing studies and who could not qualify for other types of financial aid. A contribution to this scholarship fund is but one small way to remember Amy and the things she was planning to do in her life. (submitted by Berniece H. Dwyer, Milford)

in Buzzards Bay. Route 6 is also known as The Grand Army of the Republic Highway, which passes through 14 states, which include: New York. Pennsylvania. Ohio. Indiana. Illinois. lowa. Colorado and Utah. U.S. 20 extends slightly further point-to-point, but not all of its mileage is contiguous. While visiting Nappanee. the Churchills were given gifts from different communities to welcome and help them remember their journey through Northern Indiana during their mission. Following a discussion of different heritages and why people are proud of their communities, Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson gave the Churchills a key to the city. They were also able to see a little piece of history as four members of the Seventh Indiana Light Artillery Unit fired their rifled cannon in honor of the couple’s travels, outside the chamber office in Nappanee. The Churchills have made many friends even before starting their trip. Within the first month of their Web site was fully operational, it had more than 1,100 hits, now after just two months, it has had more than 3,500 hits. They have received hundreds of e-mails and letters from people across the country offering advice, extending invitations and providing historical information about the highway. Their Web site is www.discoveringthe6.com, which they are updating daily during their trip. The Churchills are planning to write a book about the people and
pline, problem solving, communication, and family relationships. The program is designed to build on skills that parents already have. The first series will be held on Tuesday evenings, June 6 - July 25 (no class the 4th of July), 7:30 - 9:00p.m. The second will be held on Wednesday evenings, July 12 - August 23, 7:00 - 8:30p.m. A 1 lot the meetings will be at the United Way Conference Room, 222 Middlebury St., Elkhart.
