Students write essays on value of trees

Third grade students at Woodview Elementary School recently participated in a special Arbor Day tree-planting ceremony, with students also invited to write essays on the topic “If There Were No Trees.” Students also made door-knob hangers about trees, and collected money for Rain forest Conservation. Essays were judged by fifth and

JENNIFER YODER, SECOND PLACE —If there were no trees, it might be hard to breathe, because like other plants, trees give off oxygen. Trees produce homes, not only for people, but for animals, too. Trees also keep the soil from coming off of the Earth by wind and water. Trees also produce fruit for people and animals to eat. Trees grow certain kinds of nuts, too. Without trees, the world would look empty, even though flowers and grass were still on Earth. Without trees, some people might die. Even animals, such as giraffes and other animals that eat the trees’ leaves might die, too. Life would be in danger without trees. DANIEL FEECE, THIRD PLACE —If there were no trees, I could not write this essay on this piece of paper. I mean, think about it. No books to read, no wooden cabinets, no wood doors and no houses for people who wanted log cabins, no wood clocks, no book shelves, no decks by the pool in the backyard, no desks in the classrooms, and we would not be able to breath, because trees give us oxygen. Jesus would not have been able to die on the cross for our sins, because if there were no trees there would not be wood for a wooden cross for Him to die on. Trees have a long history and if we help our world by not littering and not polluting the air, we can make their history even longer. AMBER SLONE, FOURTH PLACE —If there were no trees there would be no people because there would be carbon dioxide in the air. If there weren’t any trees there wouldn’t be any oxygen, and you can’t live without oxygen. Trees mean a lot to me because I go outside and admire the beauty of the trees and the fruit on them. We need fruit because we need vitamins. If there were no trees, then we wouldn’t have any fruit and we wouldn’t have very many vitamins. There would be a lot more fighting in this world, because some people like to climb trees to cool down. I’m sure when

you were a kid, you wanted to have a treehouse, but if there weren’t any trees, how could you have a treehouse you wanted so badly? The next time you go to cut down a tree, remember once they’re gone, those people that cut them down are making people suffocate! Please don’t cut down the trees. You are only hurting yourself and others around You. So please, please don’t cut down the trees. Thank you. I know you will make the right choice.
