Three arrested for alcohol related charges
Three local residents faced incarceration last week following jurests for operating while intoxi’pated. August 28, at 2:26a.m., the Nappanee Police Department ;Jeceived two emergency 911 hang ’lip calls from the residence of 853 ‘•JI/2 North Main Street. > Upon arrival, officers found VSylvia Ruiz, 25, and her boyfriend Gomez, 29, had been Involved in a domestic dispute. Further investigation lead to infor.mation that both subjects were driving south on Main Street in two .separate vehicles when Gomez 'accidentally rear-ended the Ruiz vehicle. While Sylvia did not stop at the time of the accident, Gomez •turned around and returned to their residence. Ruiz returned home within minutes, driving through ■the yard of the residence. She ended up intentionally driving into a parked vehicle owned by Gomez. ‘ Because both subjects had caused separate accidents as a 'result of their driving, and it was apparent to officers that both were under the influence of alcohol, field sobriety tests were given. Gomez and Ruiz were eventually transported to the NPD for certified chemical tests which showed Sylvia’s blood alcohol level to be .14%. She was subsequently ’ arrested for operating while intoxicated which resulted in an acci--1 dent. Abraham Gomez refused to submit to a certified test and was charged with operating while ' intoxicated —refusal. It was later discovered that Gomez had a prior 1 arrest for OWI in 1997. That arrest made his current charges a class D felony. Gomez was also charged with resisting law enforcement after he continued giving officers resistance in handcuffing after several verbal warnings. Both subjects were transported to the Elkhart County Security Center. Ruize was held on a $1,500 bond and scheduled to appear in Nappanee City Court, September 1. Gomez was held on a $4,500 bond and scheduled for a probable

cause hearing in Elkhart County Superior Court. Arresting officers were Ptl. Joshua Hamer and Ptl. Nik Havert. Assisting reserve officers, Cpl. Matt Geiger, Ptl. Sherm Yoder and Ptl. Lee Bontrager. MISDEMEANOR In the early morning hours of August 29, Officer Nik Havert and Reserve Officer Sherman Yoder were sent to Village Apartments in Nappanee to check on a subject who lived there. After speaking with that person, the officers spoke with a resident there, William D. McDougle. Officer Havert noticed that Mr. McDougle’s balance was bad and he had an odor commonly associated with alcoholic beverages coming from his person. According to officers, McDougle admitted to having drank “a little too much,” and he had been seen pulling into the Village Apartments in his truck. William D. McDougle, 45, 1511 Brooks Drive, Apartment 82, Nappanee, failed four field sobriety tests and a chemical breathalyzer test which registered his blood alcohol count at .15%. He was placed under arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated —misdemeanor, and transported to the Elkhart County Detention Facility. McDougle was held there on a $1,500 bond. Rotary report...
