Moss in the middle Of ‘Biggest Big Top’

The Carson A Barnes Five-Ring Circus will appear in Nappanee, Sunday, August 8, 1:30p.m. and 4:30p.m., at the Derksen Farm Sportsplex, CR7. The circus is being sponsored by the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce, with portions of the proceeds going to the Nappanee Boys and Girls Club. When John Moss HI was a small boy, he watched the circus with both dread and amazement because he knew it had to eventually end. "Halfway through the shpw, I would get nervous thinking the show is halfway over," he said. Then he would spot all the props yet to be used waiting at the edge of the rings. "It would always reassure me there was more to come," Moss said. But it always ended and the eager child had to head home. Tbday, Moss has found a way to prolong the circus experience indefinitely. He’s a ringmaster, the booming voice of Carson & Barnes Circus. Moss and the “Biggest Big Tbp” are coming to Nappanee on Sunday, August 8. The five-ring show features up to seven acts at a time, under a big top measuring longer than a football field, and Moss is the voice that conducts it all. “My first (circus) memory, I guess, is when I was about 8 or 10, and we would always see the Ringling show,” Moss said. “It was just a fantasy world for me. I would wake up the next morning wondering if I had dreamt it or if I had really been there.” He imagined himself as a ringmaster, juggler, or high wire walker. He saw himself packing up the show each night, and then leaving for a new town and a new crowd. He even created fictitious routes for his personal, imaginary circus. "I thought it was just a dream, but I didn't think it would ever come true,” Moss said. “I pretty much knew what I wanted all along. I didn’t know how I was going about it.” The first step was selling concessions when the Ringling Bros, and Bamum & Bailey Circus came to his Knoxville, Tennessee hometown when he was 15. When he filmed 18 in 1985, Moss joined Ringling Bros. For the next six years, he sold cotton candy, flashlights and programs. He returned home for a few ypars, to work in a glass company, but soon grew antsy. His father, a former vaudevillian and carnival barker who became the advance riian for Carson & Barnes, mentioned that the circus needed a ringmaster. Moss jokingly suggested himself. Not long after, in February 1994, he got the job. His only training was a radio broadcasting course that helped him speak clearly, and lose most of his Tennessee drawl, and the pointers he overheard the ringmaster give an understudy during Moss' Ringling Bros. days. It was a real challenge for Moss, who described himself as a shy guy who's not much of a public speaker. That’s both a surprise and a contradiction coming from the man who is the thunderous, rolling

voice of Carson & Barnes for two shows a day, 35 weeks a year. After the big tent goes up and the spotlights flash on, the man who is more comfortable sitting back and observing becomes the literal center of attention, his smooth voice growing even richer and deeper, as he moves into the spiel that has opened circuses for generations: "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages...”
