Local law officers to conduct Operation Pull Over
Operation Pull Over and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department want drivers to know that choosing to drink and get behind the wheel could result in serious and lasting consequences. Blitz 19 aims to reach males ages 21-34 and all Hoosiers getting ready for summer activities ahead. “It’s true that driving impaired doesn’t always lead to death. It could lead to a lifetime in a wheelchair, loss of vision or speech, or the inability to use your hands,” said Sgt. David McGuire. “Considering these consequences, losing your license could be the best thing that happened.” In Indiana in 1997, those people between the ages of 20-34 were involved in 2,798 alcohol-related crashes, according to the Indiana State Police. The figure represents 43% of all alcohol-related crashes | Court News 1 The following cases have been handled through the Nappanee City Court. David Widmoyer is the judge. George Halbrook, charged with disregarding a railroad signal, paid total fine and costs of $100.50; also charged with driving while license suspended, paid total fine and costs of SSO. Jeanette-Irctlchet, charged with allowing dog to run loose, paid total fine and costs of $25; second charge of same violation, paid total fine and costs of $100.50. Jason Pick, charged with failure to register, paid total fine and costs of $100.50. Jan Geyer, charged with provocation, paid total fine and costs of $100.50. in the state in 1997. In fact, Elkhart County reports that in 1997, 13 persons were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes, five of those were between the ages of 20-34. In 1997, 37 persons were killed in traffic crashes in Elkhart County. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 68.5% of the 12,704 people killed in alco-hol-related crashes in 1997 were intoxicated themselves. The remaining 31.5% includes passengers, non-intoxicated drivers or others. “There are no innocent bystanders when it comes to impaired driving,” added Capt. Mike Books, Patrol Division Commander. “Victims of drunk driving are people you know and love. That’s why everyone in the car is responsible for safe driving. Don’t let someone you kndfe', who is impaired, get behind the wheel.” Local law enforcement officers from the Indiana State Police, Elkhart City Police, Goshen City Police, Nappanee City Police and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a sobriety check point on Friday, May 28. Local law enforcement participants from Elkhart County continue to spread the blitz message and conduct increased traffic enforcement from May 23-June 5. The blitz corresponds with Buckle Up America Week, May 24-31. For information about the activities of the blitz, contact the Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving, 317-232-1295.
