I SPORTfsGLH»S J Raiders take NLC win The North Wood High School varsity softball team dropped to 1-3 on the young season with last week’s Northern Lakes Conference loss to Northridge, 13-3. The Raiders moved to 3-4. Jessica Speed led the Panther offense with two hits, while Angie Zentz took the mound loss. Steph Duel got the pitching win for Northridge. Golfers compete at Milford The North Wood Middle School golf team competed in the Milford Invitational, Saturday, April 24, at Big Boulder Golf Course. The Panther “A” team combined for a 187 score, led by Nick Bentley with 43. He was followed by Garett Hill at 48 and Scott Gerber with 51. Leading the “B” Panthers, who totaled 189, was Jason Stump at 40, while Aaron Henkler fired a 48, Nick Brown 50 and Corey Ryman 51. The Panthers were scheduled to meet Tippy Valley Monday afternoon at Highland Hills. Zentz wins close contest North Wood’s varsity softball team slipped by Concord 1-0, in a Northern Lakes Conference contest played April 19. Heather Zentz collected the lone RBI off a double smashed in the fourth inning of the contest. Steph Mast scored the run, while JoAnna Bove and Angie Zentz also had hits in the contest. Angie Zentz was the winning pitcher in what coaches called a “good pitchers’ battle.” The Panthers were able to make the plays needed to preserve the win. Concord won the JV battle 14-2. Golfers top Wawasee Little Big Horn was the site for a Monday, April 19 golf victory for North Wood’s varsity team, over NLC foe Wawasee. The Panthers won the match 250-254. Corey Hepler was medalist with the lowest score of the night, a 43. Nick Bentley followed at 50, Scott Gerber and Kevin Yoder each had 51 and Jordon Anglemyer 55. The JV Panthers lost to the Warriors 304-314. Garett Hill led NW with 54, followed by Corey Ryman and Adam Bumworth at 63, Aaron Henkler 65 and Nick Brown 69. The “C” Panthers topped Wawasee with their 304 total, led by Jason Stump with 54, while Jeff Hertsel fired a 56, Josh Davidhizar 64, Derrick Miller 65, Jamie Skyrm and Andrew Myers 68. The girls’ team also lost to Wawasee 86-97, led by Candace Doriot at 53 for six holes, while Layne Trinkley fired 44 for four holes.

North School’s boys’ track team earned its sixth championship in Class B at the Goshen Relays, Saturday, April 24. The Panthers took firsts in just three events, but finished second in seven and placed third twice for the win. With a total of 115 team points, Coach Mark BeMiller’s squad earned 44 in field events. BeMiller stated, “This is real big for us. We finished tied for second place last year, so this is one we really wanted. The summer soccer league, sponsored by the Nappanee Early Bird Kiwanis Club, is scheduled to begin Monday, July 12. Games will be played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings for four weeks. Tournament games will begin August 9, with the final games scheduled for Saturday, August 14, according to Rodney Burnham, chairman for the league Games will be played on the Nappanee Elementary School field. Diamondmen score 29 runs in busy week of action

The North Wood varsity baseball team opened last week’s action with a big conference win over Concord, fell to Northridge in an NLC battle, and split a Saturday double-header with Angola. Against the Minutemen, the visiting Panthers opened with one run in the first, added five in a big third inning, two in the fourth and insured the win with six runs in the fifth, to take a 14-3 victory in five innings. Pitcher Todd McDonald went the distance for the win, issuing five strikeouts'while walking two and allowing six hits. He helped his on cause on offense, smashing a home run and driving in four Panther scores. Brock Doty added two hits, a stolen base and scored four times, while Dustin Potts connected on a grand slam for 4RBI. The teams were tied at 1-1 in the top of the third, when Potts broke it open, and McDonald added his two-run round-tripper in the fifth. Northridge eased by the Panthers 2-1 in a contest played Wednesday on the Raider diamond.
