Penn outlasts Panthers Penn slipped by the North Wood freshman girls’ basketball team, 26-19, in a contest played November 30. While the Panthers were falling to 2-2 on the young season, Penn advanced to 2-1. Kristin Speed led the Panthers with five points and three rebounds, while Penn was led by Alison Wilcox with 12. Frosh win NLC contest North Wood’s freshman girls’ basketball team moved to 3-2 with last week’s 26-10 Northern Lakes Conference win over Concord. The Minutewomen are 0-5. Allison Taylor led the Panthers with seven points and five steals, while Kristin Speed added six points, six steals and six rebounds, and Lee Ann Davidhizar had six points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Samantha Schafer also had five points, four steals and one assist for the winners. Milford earns victories Milford downed both the sixth grade “A” and “B” teams last week, in boys’ basketball action played at Nappanee Elementary School. The “A” team lost 50-35, with Kirk Mast leading all scorers with 22 points. Trent Chupp added seven and Ryne Myers had six. The “B” team fell 33-8, with Jay Wenger and Elliott Lentz each scoring three and Justin Miller adding two. Both teams are 1-5 on the season. Tickets on sale at NWHS Tickets for the Girls’ Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, to be held Tuesday, December 29, in New Castle, will be available at the Plymouth, Lakeland and Wawasee home contests at NWHS, as well as from 9a.m.-4p.m. December 14-17. Tickets are priced at $lO each, for a season ticket. Tickets for the Boys’ Basketball Holiday Tournament, set for Monday and Tuesday, December 28-29, will be available December 14-18, from 9am.-4p.m., and during the Concord game, Friday night, December 18, NWHS. Tickets are priced at $6 each, for a season ticket. Frosh open with wins The freshman boys’ basketball team is off to a successful start, winning its first two contests of the young season. North Wood topped LaVille in its opener, 60-18, led by Ryan Mast with 12 points. Tim Barrett added eight, with Jacob Rogers, Jason Rupp, Scott Hill and Chad Burkholder each getting six points. All Panthers scored in the contest. The Panthers followed with a 51-33 Northern Lakes Conference win over Wawasee, 51-33. ..... . „ .. , Rupp paced the offense with 15 points, while Mast and Barrett each added eight. Panthers host duals North Wood’s freshman/sophomore wrestlers placed six in a 16team field Saturday, at the Elkhart Central Rookie Classic. Panther results: 103 Brandon Wiley 3-2, sixth; 112 Brett Beehler 02, did not place; 119 Travis Hunsberger 3-2, ninth; 125 Todd Martz 31, third; 135 Josh Metzler 2-1, fifth; 140 Anthony Sanders 4-1, fifth; 152 Ken Schmucker 1-3, eighth; 153 Dustin Cray 2-2, ninth; 160 Chad Strange 4-1, fifth; 171 Ben Murphey 3-2, seventh; Tim Golden 2-3, tenth; 189 Neil Widmer 2-1, third; heavyweight Richard Herr 21, third; Khris Freed 0-2, did not place. North Wood’s varsity and junior varsity teams will wrestle in the Panther Pit, Saturday, December 12. Action begins at 10a.m. The event will feature duals against Bremen, Knox and Plymouth.

Sell reserved parking Season basketball ticket holders have the opportunity to take advantage of reserving a parking space for the home boys’ varsity basketball games. This is offered as a fund-raising project, to support the new athletic restroom/concession complex, to be constructed at Andrews Field. A personalized parking space, located close to the school, can be reserved for the 1998-99 season, including all tournament games played at North Wood High School, for SIOO. Those interested in reserving a space should contact the North Wood High School Athletic Office, 773-4127. All checks should be made payable to the Elkhart County Community Foundation. Donations to this project will be tax deductible. Register for youth leagues Boys and girls interested in participating in the Nappanee Youth Basketball League for 1999 are reminded that registration blanks are due by December 15. Blanks are available at schools, and one also appeared in the December 2 issue of The Nappanee Advance-News. Please complete the registration blank and return it with your check for $lO, made payable to Nappanee Youth Basketball League, to 25530 CRS4, Nappanee, IN. 46550. There are divisions for boys in grades Tl-2, girls Tl-2, Boys grades 3-4 and girls grades 3-4. Play will take place at the Woodview and Nappanee Elementary School gymnasiums, January 9-February 27. Athletic events rescheduled The following athletic events at North Wood High School have been rescheduled, to to conflicts created when the Panther football team advanced to the state playoff finals. The girls’ varsity and JV basketball game with Elkhart Memorial, originally scheduled for November 24, will now be played January 5, 6:15p.m., at Memorial. The game with South Bend Adams, originally scheduled for November 28, will now be played February 4,6:15p.m., at North Wood. .. „. . . „ The boys’ varsity and JV. basketball game with Triton, scheduled for December 4, will now be played January 30,6:15p.m., at North Wood. . . „ The boys’ freshman basketball game with Plymouth, originally scheduled for November 24, will now be played December 15, 6:30p.m., at North Wood. Concord falls short In contests played December 3, NWMS took on basketball teams from Goshen, with the following results. Seventh “A” topped Goshen Red, 36-23, with the Panthers now 61 on the season. Toby Mast led the offense with nine points, while Josh Sabo added six. Phil BeMiller had a team-high eight rebounds, and Sabo and Josh Yoder each handed out three assists. Concord seventh “B” was smothered by the Panthers, 27-12, with David Blown and Josh Greenlee leading the scoring attack with eight and seven points respectively. Brown also had five rebounds to pace the winners. _ „ . „ ~ Eighth “A” also won, 47-33, and is 7-0 on the season. Robbie Lightfoot poured in 20 points, to go along with four rebounds, while Brandon Hall added 10 points and four rebounds, and Ryan Bradley led in assists with five. Eighth “B” slipped by Goshen, 27-25, moving to a 4-2 season record, paced by Jake Eby’s nine points and four rebounds. Josh Estepp also had four points to go along with a team-high six rebounds.

Panther aridders earn honors

Two outstanding North Wood High School varsity football players were named last week to the high Associated Press All-State football team. Senior running back Aaron Hoover and junior quarterback Charlie Roeder, of the Panthers’ Class 3A state finalist team, are among those named for the annual post-season honors. Roeder was named for his outstanding season, completing 122242 passes for 1,823 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,129 yards and scored 22 times.

Panthers sweep Wawasee

Eighth “A” was victorious over Wawasee, in a boys’ basketball game played December 1, at NWMS. The Panthers won 52-24, moving to 6-0 on the season, while dropping Wawasee to 0-4. Brandon Hall led all scorers with 15 points, while Robbie Lightfoot added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals, and Joe Hochstetler added seven points and four rebounds. Rounding out the Panther stats were Joel Richard and Ryan Bradley, each with six points, with Bradley also totaling three assists and five steals; Adam Leeper with four points and Jordan Adams and Adam Bumworth, two apiece. Eighth “B” moved to 3-2 on the season with a 31-18 victory, paced by Andy Hostetter with eight points and Kyle Martin and Jeff Hertsel, six each. Hertsel also grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Also for the Panthers, Brent Paulus had four points, Jake Eby three and Blake Davis and Jason Stump, each two. Seventh “A” slipped past Wawasee 40-33, to move to a 5-1 record. Josh Sabo led the Panthers with 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Phil BeMiller added eight points, three assists and three steals. Josh Yoder was good on six points, Toby Mast five points and six rebounds, and Mike Bechtel five points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Huber earned his honors for his performance both on offense and defense. He rushed for 1,548 yards in 221 carries, and scored 21 touchdowns. In addition, he led in pass catches with 38 for 584 yards and six scores, and was very active as a member of the Black Crunch defensive squad. Earning honorable mention accolades for the Panthers were tackle Chad Martin, wide receiver Brad Greenlee, defensive end Todd McDonald, linebackers Justin Sellon and Corey Brown, all outstanding performers for Coach Rich Dodson’s 1998 squad.
