CHORAL PROGRAM The North Wood Middle School Choral Department invites the entire community to attend its annual Christmas concert, Monday, December 7, 7:30p.m., in the North Wood High School auditorium. Tickets are available from choir students, or at the door, and are priced at $2 for adults, or $l for students. Family tickets are also available for $3.50. SHARE CHRISTMAS There are a number of opportunities throughout the community available for those who would like to share Christmas with families in need. Among them are the Family Christian Development Center’s “Toys for Tots” drive, the Nappanee Public Library’s opportunity for providing books for gift baskets, and Open Door, which will provide baskets of food, clothing, etc. for local families at Christmas time. If you, or your organization, need further information regarding these sharing opportunities, please contact one of the three agencies for guidance. IMMUNIZATIONS The Elkhart County Health Department will offer free childhood immunizations at the First Church of God, 72036 CR7, Nappanee, Tuesday, December 8, 10a m.-2p.m. Please use the northeast rear entrance to the building. CHAMBER OFFICE The Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce office, located at 215 W. Market St., is open Monday through Friday, from 9a.m.-noon and l-4p.m. The executive director, Paul Koepke, is in the office Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday morning and Thursday. Lincoln St. Meetings are open to the public. SCHOOL BOARD The Wa-Nee Board of School Trustees will meet Monday, December 14, 7:30p.m., in the school administration building, SR 19 N, Nappanee. Meetings are open to the public. BOARD OF WORKS The City of Nappanee Board of Public Works and Safety will meet Monday, December 14, 3:30p.m., in the council chambers at the Nappanee Municipal Center, W. Lincoln St. Meetings are open to the public. RETAIL COMMITTEE The Retail Committee of the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce will meet Thursday, December 3, at the Victorian Guest House. Breakfast will begin at 7a.m., with the meeting following at 7:30a.m. All interested persons are invited to attend. COMMON COUNCIL The City of Nappanee Common Council will meet in regular session Monday, December 7, 7p.m., in the council chambers at the Nappanee Municipal Center, W. AWARD WINNER—Senior Panther Brad Greenlee earned the Class 3A edition of the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award, following Saturday afternoon's state finals game, played in the RCA Dome, Indianapolis. Brad is pictured with his parents, Randy and Gail Greenlee and brothers Jeremy and Josh. A three-year letterman, Brad served as a team captain this year, while playing wide receiver and defensive back. He has also lettered three years in track and one in basketball. Academically, Greenlee ranks in the top 10% of his class, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to attend Purdue University. The

Mayor issues proclamation designating Arbor Day
The following proclamation has been issued by Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson, proclaiming December 10 as Arbor Day in this city. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and Whereas, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, and Whereas, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and Whereas, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife, and Whereas, trees arc a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for

our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products, and Whereas, trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community, and Whereas, Nappanee has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting ways. Now Therefore, I, Larry L. Thompson, Mayor of the City of Nappanee, do hereby proclaim December 10, 1998, as Arbor Day in the City of Nappanee, and I urge all citizens to support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands and to support our City’s community forestry program, and Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations. Brad is the fourth NW player to earn this award joining Kevin Mullet (1980 Class 2A), Phil Wilson (1986 Class 3A) and Ryan Hartman (1993 Class 3A). Coach Rich Dodson stated, “I'm proud of Brad, and they way he's played for us. The award is something we've been able to win down here." Greenlee said, “It's a great honor. Facility study underway
By Merrie Chapman During the November 23 WaNee School Board meeting. President Tom Bradway announced that the facility study is underway and should be completed in approximately three months. It will look at expanding the current middle school to allow more room for the grades located there (7-8), as well as adding Wa-Nee sixth graders to the site. The architectural firm of Fanning and Howey, and the construction management firm of Construction Control, will organize the study and report cost estimates. School trustees recognized
Present holiday showcase
Nappanee. Civic Theatre will offer the holiday presentation “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” as its final production of 1998. The showcase will take place Friday and Saturday evenings, December 4-5, and Sunday, December 6, as a matinee. Curtain time for the evening shows is 7:30, while the Sunday matinee begins at 2:30. The board also paid tribute to Mindy Miller, who has been nominated for the state Indiana Vocational Award for Excellence for the 1998-99 school year. Students are nominated for this award based on scholarship, citizenship, leadership, employability and vocational skill proficiency. The grant money is being offered from the Indiana General Assembly to the schools that successfully complete the Performance-Based Accreditation (PBA) process during 1997-98 school year. Grant monies will be distributed to the schools as follows: $2,076 to Nappanee Elementary; $2,209 —Wakarusa Elementary; $2,450 —Wood view Elementary; sl,7s3—NorthWood Middle; $2,900 —North Wood High School.
