Big 49-14 title win moves NW to regional
Fourteen points each in quarters one, two and four, and seven in the third proved overwhelming for Whitko, as North Wood’s football Panthers sailed past the visiting Wildcats Friday night, November 6, to earn a 10th Class 3A Sectional 19 title. North Wood opened with a TD by lan Reed, on a 10-yard pass from Charlie Roeder, followed by two scores by Roeder himself, to go along with a TD by Jason Brenneman and three by Aaron Huber. Andy Mitschelen added 7-7 PAT kicks to round out the scoring attack. Although statistics showed the Panthers running just 44 offensive plays and controlling the pigskin for a total of 15:31, the scores were on the board, with Coach Rich Dodson reporting, “Time of possession can be a misleading stat. We scored on defense and came up with the big plays on offense. The bottom line was we led 28-8 at halftime. Our offense scored quick. We made some big plays and got a couple touchdowns early, and that gave us the leverage for the rest of the game.” The first Panther score came at 8:24 of the opening stanza, with Reed hauling in Roeder’s 10-yard toss. Roeder followed with a 53yard run to paydirt, at 4:30 of the first, and the hosts were out front quickly. Huber nailed down his first score of the night at 10:52 of the second period, picking up a Whitko fumble, and rambling 63 yards for a score. The Wildcats got on the board at 4:13 of the second, on Goble’s 20yard pass catch from Mohr. Gonzales ran for two extra points, and the Cats had eight. However, the Panthers scored again before halftime, on Roeder’s nifty 56yard run, at 3:36, with the hosts taking a comfortable 28-8 edge into halftime. Gonzales added six more Whitko points at 7:47 of the third, on a one-yard plunge, but the Panthers followed with seven

Big wins in Panther League The Celtics moved to 2-0 on the season with a 32-27 win over the 1-I’Pistons, in last week’s Panther League basketball play. Leading the winners was Ryne Lightfoot with a big 20-point output, while teammates Trevor Hershberger, Kit Clouse and Evan Huesinkveld added six, four and two points respectively. For the Pistons, Derren Lengacher popped in 11 points, followed by Ben Bemiller with nine, Chad Haviland’s four, and Matt Hively and Brad Paulus with two and one respectively. The Pacers also moved to 2-0 by virtue of a 45-10 crushing of the 0-2 Bulls. Zac Lechlitner led the Pacers with 12 points, while Ryan Burkhart added 10, Nathan Davidhizar eight, Jared Stump six and Kyle Yoder five. Rounding out the Pacer attack were Brandon Martin and Sam Teleschow, each with two. For the Bulls, Daric Stump scored four, while Cody Deavers, Brett Hollar and Brad Nivar each added two. points of their own, on Huber’s four-yard pass catch from Roeder, with Mitschelen adding his fifth PAT kick of the night. Fourth-quarter tallies came on Huber’s five-yard run, and on Brenneman’s seven-yard score, with Mitschelen once again on target, and the Panthers had their title. Os Huber’s scores, Dodson stated, “Huber has scored almost every way imaginable. He has rushed, caught, scored off fumbles, returned punts and kicked extra points. But the one thing he hasn’t done is i[ptqp\ a kick. And, if it wasn’t for a penalty, he would’ve done it.” For the night, the Panthers had just 13 first downs, to Whitko’s 20. North Wood totaled 391 yards of offense, to 327 for their guests. The Panthers had a fumble, losing it, while Whitko miscued twice, losing one. North Wood was penalized three times for 35 yards and Whitko 5-37. Roeder led the rushing attack, with 182 yards on eight keepers, while Huber added 107 on 10 carries, Chad Knisley 38 on five, Mike Blosser 15 on three, Brenneman 10 on two, Chaz Scherer eight on one and Corey Brown seven on three. The junior signal-caller completed 5-6 passes for 83 yards and one TD, with Reed hauling in two for 22 yards, Huber 2 for two yards and Blair Baumgartner one for 11. The defense was led by Corey Brown, Justin Sellon and Brad Greenlee, each with double digits in tackles, at 14, 12 and 11 respectively. Brown and Sellon each added tackles for loss. Joe Abel had nine tackles, fol-. lowed by Andy Sheets with seven, Todd McDonald five, Huber and Trent Stump, four each (Huber a fumble recovery), and Tony Garl, Daryl Berger and Willy Will, each three. Garl had the lone QB sack of the night. Rounding out the “D” were
Brock Doty, Chad Martin, Derek Mast, Bill Mitschelen and Roller, two each (Doty one for loss), and and one each by Moser, Hartzell, A. Mitschelen, Lane, Reed, Higley, Lantzer, Brenneman and Scherer. North Wood (9-3) will host Harding (10-2) Friday, November 13, for the regional title. Harding’s Hawks rolled over Peru Friday, 63-7, to earn a sectional title. The two teams are meeting each other for the second straight season, with Harding taking last year’s game 28-21. A win for the Panthers would mean they would either host Twin Lakes, or visit Andrean in the semi-state contest, Friday, November 20. Championship games are set for Thanksgiving weekend, November 27-28, in the RCA Dome, Indianapolis. Dodson remarked, “Our ultimate goal is to be playing three weeks from now, and I hope we do, but we have to take one game at a time and continue to improve.”
