Obituaries... Beatrice Tobias Mar. 26, 1926-Oct. 28, 1998 Beatrice “Bea” Tobias, 72, 69506 CR3, Nappanee, died Wednesday, October 28, at Elkhart General Hospital. Bom March 26, 1926, in Kosciusko County, she was the daughter of John and Mona (Dunnick) Linn and a lifetime area resident. She married Doug Tobias, January 25, 1948, in Nappanee, and he survives. A homemaker, Mrs. Tobias was also a member of the Nappanee American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving with Mr. Tobias are a son, Brett Tobias, Middlebury, and a sister, Mrs. Marvin (June) Huffman, Huffman Lake. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Dora Miller, Cleo Hartman and Helen Whitman, and three brothers: Earl, John and Richard Linn. The Rev. Ken Huhn conducted services Friday morning, October 30, at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, with burial at Bremen Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or United Cancer Services of Elkhart County. Noah S. Anderson May 16, 1919-Oct. 29, 1998 Minister Noah S. Anderson, 79, 11552 N 1000 W, Nappanee, died Thursday, October 29, at his residence, following a nine-week illness. Bom May 16, 1919, in Morroco, he was the son of Simon and Sarah (Mullet) Anderson, and moved to Nappanee in 1943, from Morroco. He married Emma M. Thomas, December 31, 1942, in Nappanee, and she survives. Mr. Anderson was a farmer and painter, and a r member and minister in the Old ; Order Amish Church. Surviving with Mrs. Anderson i are three sons: Ivan, Goshen and I David and Noah, Jr., both of Nappanee; seven daughters: Mrs. Samuel (Inez) Mast and Miss ’ Rosetta Anderson, both of Nappanee; Mrs. Elmer (Treva) Otto, Mrs. Lester (Alma) Miller and Mrs. Marvin (Mary) Otto, all of Kokomo; Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Yoder, Topeka and Mrs. Harley (Anna) Miller, Etna Green; 45 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Eli Anderson, Homesville, Ohio, and two sisters: Mrs. David (Millie) Hostetler, Kokomo, and Mrs. William (Anna) Yoder, Homesville. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; two brothers: William and Jonas Anderson; two sisters: Lovina Blankenbaker and Mary Ann Stanley, and a son-in-law. Bishop John Earl Miller and Bishop Lonnie Slabaugh conducted services Sunday morning, November 1, at the Larry Schwartz residence, with burial at Weldy Cemetery. Arrangements were with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Mary Atkinson Oct. 10, 1923-Oct. 30, 1998 Mary Nusbaum Atkinson, 75, 12795 N 500 W, Milford, died Friday, October 30, at her home, following an illness of iwo years. Bom October 10, 1923, in Wakarusa, she was the daughter of Edward and Lizzie (Metzler) Nusbaum, and a lifetime area resident. She was a graduate of Wakarusa High School and of business college, and had worked at Coppes Credit Union for many years. She had also worked at the Nappanee District Office of the Church of the Brethren, and as a bookkeeper at Fairmont Homes. She was a member of Turkey Creek Church of the Brethren, Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers and Turkey Creek Homebuilders. She married John Dale Atkinson, April 21, 1946, in Wakarusa, and he died September 1,1998. Surviving are a son, John Atkinson, Nappanee; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Beth) Hostetler, Elkhart; four grandchildren, and a brother, Roy Nusbaum, Granger. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Robert Fletcher and Harold Nusbaum. The Rev. Roger Eberly conducted services Monday afternoon.

A new day in the campaign for a safer community began Saturday, November 2, at Turkey Creek Church of the Brethren, with burial at Union Center Cemetery. Arrangements were with Thompson & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Memorials may be made to her church or to the Elkhart Community Hospice. Laura J. Nissley Oct. 14, 1911-Oct. 30, 1998 Laura J. Slabaugh Nissley, 87, 9547 N 1000 W, Nappanee, died Friday, October 30, at Elkhart General Hospital, where she had been admitted a day earlier. Bom October 14, 1911, in Middlebury, she was the daughter of John I. and Barbara (Miller) Bontrager, and had resided in Nappanee most of her life. She was a homemaker and member of the Sandy Ridge Conservative Mennonite Church. Her first marriage was to Eli J. Slabaugh, Oct. 15, 1938, and he died January 30, 1982. She then married Joseph Mast in 1986, and he died the same year. Her third marriage was to Daniel H. Nissley, November 28, 1992, and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mervin (Rose Mary) ■Stutzman, Scottdale, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren: Karl, Daniel and Kathy Stutzman, Scottdale; five step-daughters: Mrs. Cleo (Miriam) Orendorf and Mrs. Edwin (Treva) Yoder, both of Nappanee; Sue Ellen Valladares, South Bend; Ruby Nissley, LaJara, Colorado and Mrs. John (Barbara) Allyn, Goshen; seven step-sons: Homer Nissley, South Bend; Melvin Nissley, Elkhart; Vernon Nissley, Donna, Texas; Lloyd and Ira Nissley, both of Nappanee; Daniel Nissley, Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Vernon Mast, Elgewood, Kentucky; 40 stepgrandchildren, 80 step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild; two brothers: Lee Bontrager, Shipshewana, and Mahlon Bontrager, Madison, Wisconsin, and four sisters: Mrs. Edna Coblentz, Hartsville, Ohio; Mrs. Rosa Miller, Middlebury; Mrs. Ida Hershberger, Topeka and Mrs. Lydia Mae Kauffman, Goshen. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Slabaugh; two step-grandchildren, four brothers: Melvin, Harley, Harry and Perry Bontrager and two sisters: Katie Ann Jones and Anna Miller. Bishops David Miller, Jr., Homer Miller and Elmer Miller conducted services Monday morning, November 2, at Bethel Conservative Mennonite Church, with burial in the church cemetery. October 10, at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen. Over 1,000 persons came together to learn about, and, in som£ cases pledging to live, a vio-lence-free life. Reaching Common Ground is a movement of agencies, organizations, departments and individuals with the goal of working together to provide peaceful alternatives to violence in Elkhart County. Although October 10 was the first event to showcase who this group is, it is only a beginning. November 5, a community discussion on violence in the community will take place from 8:30a.m.noon. This' discussion will focus on what agencies and others are currently doing to combat violence. At the end of the meeting, participants will know what community resources are available, and where the anti-violence cam- . paign needs to begin. It appears as if a female distracted the only employee, while a male accomplice reached behind the counter and removed a basket of gold items. The male disappeared. After a short time, the male reappeared and told the woman with the employee that it was time to go. After the couple left, the employee noticed that the basket which had been sitting on top of the safe was missing. There were no other customers seen near the kiosk, according to the employee. CHURCH NOTES Hosts gospel concert Bremen Missionary Church, 2958 Elm Road, will host an evening of gospel music, November 8. That evening the Bremen Missionary Church Quartet and the Hueni Family will present a full length gospel concert at the church, 6p.m.. It will feature old time gospel music, hymns and gospel songs sure to delight the community. The Quartet has sung in a number of local churches. The members are Jim Bellman, Jack Hueni, Kendall Hartzell and Ted Jones, accompanied by Cherie Bellman. The Hueni family is a well known group who have performed in the area for a number of years. The community is invited to attend this concert. Begin parents’ group The Nappanee Church of the Brethren, Mack Drive, is hosting a Wednesday morning parents’ group, for parents who are home during weekdays, and who would like to connect with other parents. The sessions begin each Wednesday at 10:30a.m., meeting in the pre-school room, to allow children a place to play while parents discuss ideas on how to get to know one another better and help to support each other. The group could become a play group, Bible study and prayer group, or a discussion group which helps parents to learn to be more effective, or any Combination of these ideas, or others. If you are a parent at home on Wednesday mornings, you are invited to come help explore how to best support one another. Bring your children along, as well as some simple foods to share, so the group can play, talk and enjoy a simple lunch together. The Women’s Fellowship of the church will host its annual Christmas Bazaar, Saturday, November 7, from Ba.m.-2p.m. In addition to crafts, food items and other special offerings, there will be coffee and rolls in the morning, a cookie walk, and a luncheon served. Everyone is welcome. Sunday school classes for persons of all ages begin each Sunday morning at 9:00, with the morning worship service beginning at 10:00. Lisa Hufford is the pastor. A children’s church is also provided during worship, and nursery and crib room care are available. You are welcome.
Cancer Society sponsors card sales
The holidays are less than two months off. Did you know you can fight cancer and purchase Christmas/holiday cards, at the same time? The Elkhart County Unit of the American Cancer Society is once again selling cards for the holidays. Mary Ellen Shamory, chairman, reported, “The beautiful cards are from Burgoyne, Inc., and the selection is incredible, both the family/individual and the business line.” Part of the proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society. For your donation, you will receive a box of 25 cards, as well as helping to fund life-saving canCareer center hosts holiday open house The Elkhart Area Career Center Horticulture/Floral Design Department will hold its fourth annual holiday open house, November 12-13. at the career center. Decorated trees, wreaths, floral arrangements and other holiday decorations will be available for purchase. Students in the program design and produce the items for sale. Proceeds support the horticulture program. Open house hours arc 8:30a.m.6p.m. Thursday, and 8:30a.m.2:30p.m. Friday.
