Building A Better Community... (This continues the series of articles highlighting individuals in our community who give willingly and freely of themselves for the betterment of all who live here. I hope you will come to know and appreciate each of them as I have.) By Merrie Chapman Art instructor Jenny Shaw, has spent the past 15 years making art fun to team for Wa-Nee students. Shaw graduated from NorfhWood High School and Taylor University before returning to her hometown to teach. Since her return Jenny has helped build the art programs at both South and Woodview Elementaries. When a veteran art teacher retired at North Wood Middle School three years ago. Shaw took the opportunity to move into that level of work. “I really like, working with middle school kids,” says Mrs. Shaw. Her work with the students shows her excitement and enthusiasm for their talents. During the 1995-96 school year Shaw encouraged students to enter projects in the Symphony in Color Young People's Art Contest. Student Lorinda Stutzman designed a piece inspired by “A Fairy Garden of Delight,” a section of “The Fifth Tableau.” in Maurice Ravel’s “Mother Goose.” Stutzman went on to win that state competition. Her work was featured in the 1996-97 Indianapolis Cultural Calendar titled “Sites and Sounds of the City.” Woodview Elementary purchased the painting from Miss Stutzman. It remains framed, matted and on display in that facility Bethel students named to Who’s Who The 1999 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges will include the names of 44 students from Bethel College, Mishawaka, who have been selected as national outstanding leaders. Among them are Andrea Donegan, Kimberly Engbrecht and Tambcrli Persing, Nappanee, and Sara Freed and Loraine Wisler, Wakarusa. Campus nominating committees and editors of the annual directory have included the names of these students, based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. They join an elite group of students selected from more than 1,900 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations.

to this day. The painting serves as an inspiration for all the students to admire and appreciate. Jenny Shaw received recognition from both Wa-Nee Community Schools, and those in connection with the Symphony, in Color contest, for her part in introducing Stutzman to the contest and overseeing her project. Another significant recognition for Wa-Nee came when Lisa Traub won the Goid Key Award during regional judging of the Scholastic Art Competition earlier this year. Out of the estimated 3,0004.000 pieces entered in that contest. Traub's abstract watercolor painting was one of only 75 which earned the honor. It was displayed at the South Bend Regional Museum of Art. February 7-21.

Lisa received her Gold Key award during an awards ceremony at Bendix Theater, South Bend. Shaw takes no credit for the accomplishment of any of her students, saying simply “they are very talented.” But she expresses great joy in working with them. Jenny’s excitement over the work of her students, and her belief in their talents motivate her to display their pieces all over the middle school building. Hallways become splashes of color while art work and creative projects entertain students between classes. The end result appears evident as happy faces leave her classroom and show pride in their work. Hats off to Jenny Shaw for sharing her love of art and making it so much fun for her students.
