Youth/adult league set to bowl The adult/youth bowling league will begin competition Saturday, November 7. 7p.m. This is for two adults and two youth per team. Sign up is taking place now, at Gold Crown Lanes, Nappanee. or call 773-2145, and ask for Paul or Deb. Bth grade netters see tourney action North Wood Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team traveled to Syracuse. October 3, to participate in the Wawasee Tourney. In game one the ladies took on Whitko falling 15-6 and 15-7. Brandie Lengacher. Andrea Jenkins. Carla Howard and Nicole Fishburn led the Panther efforts. The loss left the team with an 8-6 record. A consolation game against Wawasee followed leaving the Panthers on top with winning scores of 15-4 and 15-2. The game left the ladies with an improved record of 9-6. North Wood defends title at Northridge The North Wood High School volleyball team will participate in the Northridge Volleyball Sectional, set for October 15 and 17. at Northridge. The Class 3A, Sectional 20, will pit Northridge and Lakeland in the opening game. Thursday, October 15. at 6p.m.. followed by the West Noble-Angola contest. North Wood will meet Wawasee Saturday. October 17, at 11a.m., followed by the winners of the first two games, setting the stage for the finals. The tournament championship will take place at approximately 4p.m.. Saturday. North Wood is the defending champion, with the Panthers under the guidance of Coach Peg Bough. Middle School runners fall to Wawasee Both the girls' and boys’ cross country teams from North Wood Middle School fell victim to Warsaw. October 8. The boys' team ended with a 4019 score and a I -11 record. Blain McDowell led North Wood with a fourth place finish and a time of 12:05. Joel Richard was sixth with 12:16, and Jody Sarber seventh with a time of t 12:21. Josh Richmond finished 15th, Brent Paulus 16th. Corey Wesley 21st. Matt Cleveland 22nd, Josh Brown 24th. Jason Sheppard 25th, Peter Rummel was 26th and Casey Martin 27th. The girls' team finished 50-15. Kelly Easton led the Lady Panthers with a fifth place finish and a time of 14:32. Becky Hufford finished sixth with a time of 15:22. Ashley Bowen finished eighth at 15:53. The meet left the ladies with a cord of 0-14. Young netters 9arn victory over Goshen Eighth grade volleyball players from North Wood Middle School losted Goshen to two defeats, ('ctober 8. The first came with scores of 15-5 and 15-5. Leslie Yeager and Andrea Jenkins were high scorers. A second victory fallowed with scores of 15-3 and 15-7, leaving he team record at 12-7. Trina Andrews and Mary Egging were high scorers for that match. SFVENTH GRADE While their older peers were hosting Goshen, seventh graders traveled to that city to earn yet another win. In game one the Panthers earned a 15-4 and 15-7 victory over their hosts. In game two the result was the same, this time scores equaled 15-6 and 15-1. In game one Lyndsay Ballinger led the way with nine points. Laync Trinkley and Jessica Focht contributed with consistent, play. Amanda Gunn had a great' net game. The second game made Kara Huff a leader with 12 points. Chclsa Qrosse added seven points, jimLDanielle Diemen gave sideline assistance.

Two scores in three minutes insure ‘senior night’ win

North Wood's varsity football team scored 13 points in the final three minutes of Friday’s Northern Lakes Conference game with Warsaw, taking the contest 34-28, over the visiting Tigers. It was senior night, and team leader Aaron Huber once again sparked the win with two lategame pass receptions, one for a touchdown and the other to set up a score which enabled the win. In addition, the senior halfback rushed for 103 yards and two scores, and caught four passes for an additional 110 yards. Coach Rich Dodson said of his ace, “Aaron’s done a great job, there is no doubt about that. He’s a competitor. he made some plays for us tonight. We appreciate he’s on our side.” North Wood scored first in the contest, putting seven on the board at 8:09 of the opening quarter, on senior Chad Knisley’s five-yard run. Andy Mitschelen was successful on the PAT boot, and the home team was on its way. The visitors put up a score of their own at 8:57 of the second period of play, on VanLacken’s pass interception, returned 58 yards to paydirt. The PAT kick was good and the game was tied. Huber followed with a one-yard run to the end zone, followed by another of Mitschelen’s boots, putting the Panthers back out front. 14-7, but it didn’t last long. Warsaw punched across another TD at :42 of the half, on Esquivel’s three-yard run, the kick for pointafter was good, and the contest was tied at halftime. Esquivel stunned the Panthers with a 65-yard run to paydirt at 8:48 of the third, but Huber followed with a two-yard scamper across the line with 4:06 remaining. Both kicks were again good, with the score remaining even. With just over five minutes remaining in the conference contest. the Tigers sent Seiss across from two yards out to score the goahead points. The kick was good and the guests were out front 2821. JV outshines Warsaw 24-6

The junior varsity football players at North Wood High School put their hosts to shame October 10, earning a 24-6 victory. Chaz Scherer had 16 carries for a total of 158 yards, and a twoyard touchdown. Jared Hershberger ran 46 yards on the grid iron to add a TD to the Panther scoreboard.

Eighth ‘B’ wins in two games

The seventh grade volleyball team fell to Fairfield in two matches played October 5 at North Wood, with the visitors taking the first match in two games, 15-4, 15-3 and the second in three games, 15-8, 12-15, 15-9. Stevi Hoffer led all scorers with

plays to go 83 yards, and run out 10:49 of the clock. Five plays and two minutes later, the Panthers once again saw Huber cross the goal-line, this time on a 40-yard pass play from junior QB Charlie Roeder. Mitschelen was there to score the PAT kick and the contest was tied once again. The Panther defense was able to hold Warsaw to just three yards in the next series, forcing a punt and a Panther takeover, with about a minute and a half remaining. Huber broke free for 51 yards, setting up a game-winning TD by Knisley from two yards out. The PAT kick failed, but North Wood had the 34-28 win. Dodson said of his charges, "They really kept their composure. They battled back and overcame what I thought was some adversity." On the night, the Panthers had 16 first downs, to 11 for the Tigers. North Wood totaled 340 yards of offense, with 199 coming on the ground and 141 through the air. Warsaw was good for 214-52 for a total of 266. The Panthers fumbled three times, losing one, while Warsaw was 0-0. Two penalties were tacked on the hosts, for 15 yards, while the guests had 3-35. Roeder, Huber and Knisley combined for 85, 103 and 37 yards on the ground respectively, on 14, 18 and 10 totes. Roeder was good on 6-14 passes, with Huber hauling in four and 110 yards and Greenlee two for 31 yards. Brown led the Black Crunch with 15 tackles, including three for loss and a QB sack, while Sheets added nine, Sellon eight, McDonald and Greenlee each seven and Stump six. Rounding out the defensive effort were Abel and Huber with five hits each, Moser and Mast each four. Bill Mitschelen three, Martin two and Doty, Lane and Reed each one. Elsewhere in the Northern Lakes Conference, Concord blanked Northridge 28-0, Goshen handled Plymouth 42-20, and

Mike Blosser earned a one-yard TD, and an 83-yard TD pass to Nate Brown. David Higley made 11 tackles and one quarterback sack to seal the deal. Asa team the Panthers rushed for a total of 257 yards and threw 144 yards on 6-8 passing.

10 points for the Panthers. The eighth team also fell in three games, 15-8, 10-15, 14-16, moving to 9-7 on the season. For eighth “B" the Panthers were victorious in two games, 1512, 15-3.

Marian topped Wawasee 21-9 in non-league action. Goshen remains atop the NLC heap with a 5-0 mark (8-0 overall), while Plymouth and (lie Panthers are tied at 4-1 (7-1. 6-2 respectively overall). Concord and Warsaw 2-3 (both 4-4). Northridge 1-5 (2-6) and Wawasee 0-5 (1 -7). This week signals the end of regular-season play, with the Panthers heading to Plymouth for a conference contest. Playoffs begin Friday. October 22, with the Panthers heading to Angola for Class 3A first-round competition.

Lincoln won the meet with 19 points, followed by Grissom at 36 and NW at 50. Kelly Easton led the Panthers with a 14th place finish, in 14:20. Becky Hufford finished 23rd in 15:24 and Ashley Bowen 30th at 16:35. Morgan Uceny of Lincoln had the best time, winning the run with 12:05. A total of 47 runners competed.

had a fumble recovery and Adam Leeper grabbed a pass interception. Josh Estep and Jamie Garcia also blocked punts in the contest. In seventh grade action, the Panthers were shutout by Plymouth, 6-0. in a close contest. Phil Bemiller gained 49 yards in five carries. Josh Sabo 39 in five, with two passes bringing him an additional 21, and Joe Beer gained 11 yards in two totes. Trent Mast added 27 in two, Andrew Meyers 27 in tour and Randy Mitschelen caught a pass for 14 yards. On defense. Austin Mattem had 11 hits.
