Seek district officials

The Elkhart County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is looking for persons with an interest in local natural resources management, who would like to serve as district officials. Candidates are being sought for both an elected and an appointed seat on the district’s five-member board of supervisors. The term of office for both positions runs from February 1999 through February 2002. The Elkhart County SWCD is a legal subdivision of state government, and is responsible for the protection, conservation and wise use of the soil, water and related resources within the county. Activities of the district are directed by the five supervisors, three who are elected by local iandusers and two who are appointed upon recommendation by the local SWCD to the Indiana Soil Conservation Board. Meeting on the third Monday evening of each month, the supervisors plan and oversee the efforts aimed at fulfilling the district’s responsibilities, which include: assessing the natural resources management needs within the county; developing and implementing policies and programs Haylift starting in area Efforts are getting started across Indiana to send hay to farmers in Oklahoma and Texas, where . drought has severely affected the forage supply. If you have hay that you would like to donate to the cause, you can contact the Elkhart County Extension Office, 219-533-0554. You will be asked to provide information including the size of the bales, the type and quality of the hay, and the amount you wish to donate. When transportation can be arranged, you will be contacted with details of moving hay to local collection sites. Farmers with enough hay to complete a semiload, approximately 400 small bales, may be able to arrange for pickup at your farm. It is hoped that all pledges for hay will be collected by Thanksgiving, and that the hay will be distributed by Christmas. You can show your support for the effort in other ways. Help is needed to truck the hay to the devastated areas, and cash donations could be used to cover the costs of fuel and trucking. Contact the extension office for further information.
