Determined visitors from

A touchdown and PAT in each quarter of Friday night’s non-con-ference contest proved to be plenty, as the North Wood varsity football team celebrated homecoming in style, with a 28-0 shutout over Dowagiac at Andrews Field. October 2 weather was not cooperative, with chilly breezes and plenty of rain falling throughout the contest, however Coach Rich Dodson and crew showed the Indiana brand of football in easily handling Michigan’s previouslyundefeated Chieftains. The Panthers were the lone team to defeat Dowagiac last season, and the two teams have signed a contract which will insure at least two more meetings, through the year 2000. While last year’s defeat kept the Chieftains out of the playoffs in Michigan, this year’s defeat still leaves them with a shot at post-season play. Dodson stated of his 5-2 Panthers, “I think up front, our defense played pretty dam well. Our linebackers were solid. Our young secondary guys need some work. We could’ve given up some big plays there, but then again, we didn’t. It’s (the rain) the kind of weather you’re more likely to get in the playoffs, so that was a good sign.” On the night, North Wood racked up a total of 350 yards on offense, to just 106 for their guests. The Panthers totaled 321 yards rushing and added 29 passing. The Chieftains were 45 and 61. North Wood punted just once, for 50 yards, while their visitors punted four times for a 25.5-yard average. North Wood fumbled three times, losing the ball twice, while Dowagiac was 1-1. The Panthers suffered three penalties lor 35 yards, and the Chieftains 210. Scoring was by Charlie Roeder, at 1:07 of the opening quarter, on a one-yard run; Aaron Huber, at 1:04 of the second, on an 11 -yard scamper. and at 5:28 of the third, on a four-yard run. and Chad Knisley La Vi He no match for Panthers NorthWood.’s varsity tennis team tuned up for sectional com-’ petition last week, with a 5-0 shutout win over non-conference foe La Vi lie.
