CELEBRATE 50 YEARS—BiII and Rosemary (Nye) Metzler, Nappanee/Arizona, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, October 24. They were married October 24, 1948, at the Trinity Methodist Church, Elkhart, by the Rev, Russell Kern. Their family entertained the couple and their friends with a buffet dinner at the Country Cottage, Nappanee, during the past summer. Bill and Rose Mary, who recently left to spend the winter in Arizona, are the parents of Dan Metzler and Diane Davis, Nappanee, and David, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. (Photo provided) Club notes -
FEDERATED HOMEMAKERS The Federation of Homemakers Clubs w-ill meet for its annual luncheon. Tuesday. October 20. at Ron's Bakery and Restaurant, Nappanee. Registration will begin at 11:30a.m.. with the luncheon at noon. Reservations are due by October 16. to Thyra Keiser. 219-773-4290. TOPS 425 Nappanee Tops. 425 met Monday morning, at First Church of God. with the leader, Nancy Hershberger, presiding. Weigh-in begins at Ba.m., with the meeting starting at 9:15a.m. New members are welcome. The Tops Song was sung, and Happy Birthday was sung to Erma Martin. The secretary and treasurer read their reports. Roll call was taken, with 20 members weighing in. The week's best loser was Marlene Brovont. The challenge for the week is “Brush your teeth after every meal.’’ Helen Newcomer is a Kops. October contests were distributed, and the September weight report was presented, with Marcile Weaver as the best loser and Ruth Manges as runner-up. Helen Newcomer was at or below goal for the month. Lydia Weaver received a two-year Kops pin and Lois Miller got an eightyear pin. Nancy Hershberger read an article about snacking, and a paper on how to lose those last 10 pounds. Safety program offered on shooting sports The Elkhart County 4-H Shooting Sports Club will offer a Hunter Safety Education Course, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, October 9-10, at the ECCC Building, lower level, at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds, Goshen. This course is required for all who are interested in participating in 4-H Shooting Sports in 1999. Other individuals who are interested in obtaining their Hunter Safety Certification are also invited to participate. The course teaches safety and responsibility with firearms. Participants are required to come to both sessions. The Friday session. October 9, will be from 69p.m.. and the Saturday session, October 10. from 8:30a.m.-3p.m. Participants are to bring a sack lunch on Saturday. The program is free of charge. Participants must pre-register by contacting Robin Rigsby, 4-H Shooting Sports Leaderj 219-862-2272. •

Paternal greatgrandfather is Noble Dougherty, Nappanee, and maternal greatgrandmother is Lillian Hague, Kendallville. Steve and Barb Reinhardt, Nappanee, son, Matthew Scott, September 25, Memorial Hospital of South Bend. He weighed in at eight pounds, five ounces, and is 20-1/2” long. Tim Yoder was here to take part in the activities. Walter Golden. Elkhart, spoke at last week's meeting, about physical therapy. The director of the Third Annual Elkhart County Women's Show, to be held March 27-28, at Concord Mall, found an exciting letter in her mail recently. Amber Hershberger received a S2OO check from Lisa Kudrow, the September 13 Emmy winner for Best Supporting Actress for a Comedy Series. Lisa's character in the comedy series, "Friends,” is the spacey, hut lovable folk singer and massage therapist, Phoebe. Although Kudrow will not be able to visit the show, due to her “Friends” and baby schedules, she
Carry-in dinner shared at local senior center
Nappanee's Senior Center, Elder Haus, located at 258 E. Market St., is open Monday through Friday, with special activities planned daily. The center will host a carry-in dinner Wednesday, October 14 at noon. Elder Haus will provide pork roast, and Amber will bring her famous dressing. Others are asked to bring food to share, and your own table service. A trip to the NE Indiana Center for History and the museum, South Bend, is set for Wednesday, October 21. This should be an interesting trip. In addition to the museum, there is an unusual gift shop. Lunch at Tippecanoe Place will also be special. Call early for your reservation, 773-2424. Library showcases history
Discover what it was like in Indiana before the Civil War Sunday. October 11. 2p.m.-3p.m., at the Nappanee Library. Woodview teacher Dennis Myers will share information and stories about events and people in Indiana prior to the Civil War. Participants will hear about Abraham Lincoln, pioneers, and Indians who resided in the area. The Polawatomi and Miami Indians spent time in this area and have left arrowheads and other artifacts. The Potawatomi Indians were a very powerful tribe before the Civil War. A group of Miami Indians lead by chief “Little Turtle” made their home in the ~

said, “I do think it is wonderful that you are raising money to help women and children of domestic violence, and hope you will accept my donation toward your cause.” Courtney Cox, who plays the obsessively neat restaurant chef Monica on Friends, also sent two signed autographs. These will be used as raffle prizes for the Women's Show in March. Last spring’s show was a big success, with all proceeds benefiting the Elkhart County Women’s Shelter, a 20-bed safe house for female victims of domestic violence and their children.

Dennis and his wife. Sarah, have two grown children and four grandchildren. His hobbies include golf, reading about Indiana and playing with his grandchildren. Myers has taught fourth grade for 35 years with 27 of those years in the Wa-Nee School Corporation. Indiana history was taught in the eight grade until the state legislature moved the curriculumto fourth grade.
