Gridders recover to slap Northridge 42-10
After a quick TD. North Wood committed three costly errors, and had Panther fans worried in Friday night’s Northern Lakes Conference varsity football battle at Andrews Field. However, the Panthers recovered, roiling to a big 42-10 victory over the Raiders to move to 4-2 overall (3-1 in NLC). while Northridge dropped to 2-4 (1-3). The Panthers scored on their first possession of the ball game, when QB Charlie Roeder scampered in from the 48 and Bill Mitschelen kicked the PAT, to give the home team a 7-0 lead at 11:14 of the opening stanza. However, the Raiders had a plan of their own. scoring at 2:55 of the first, on Weldy's three-yard run, with Rants kicking the PAT to tie the contest. Northridge followed with a Rantz 26-yard Held goal at 9:29 of the second, giving the guests a 10-7 edge. Following their quick score, Roeder threw an interception and the Panthers fumbled on their next two possessions, helping their guests take a temporary lead. •‘We’ve been preaching to the kids about playing 48 minutes of good football, and I wish we could do it,” stated Coach Rich Dodson. “One of the three turnovers was the result of a Northridge hit, the other two were our own doings.” North Wood’s standout senior performer. Aaron Huber, did not enter the game until halfway through the second stanza, due to injury, but once he came in, he made his presence known, finishing the evening with two touchdowns and a game-high (tie with Roeder) 110 rushing yards (76 in 'he second quarter). Following the Raider field goal, NW scored twice in the second, once on Huber’s six-yard run, with the PAT kick failing, and again on r had Knisley's one-yard plunge, with Jeff Baumgartner hauling in a Roeder pass for two extra points. The scores gave the Panthers breathing room at halftime, going in with a 21-10 edge. Huber scored again in the third, on a 29-yard run at 6:07, with Mitschelen’s kick good, and Roeder took it in on a fine 53-yard run at 4:16, with Mitschelen’s kick once again good, and the Panthers up 35-10. Justin Lantzer scored the final Panther TD on a four-yard run, with Mitschelen booting his fourth PAT, and North Wood had the NLC win. On the night, the Panthers racked up 15 first downs, and 398 yards of offense, with 306 coming from the rushing game and 92 through the air. The Raiders had just eight first downs, and totaled 163 yards on offense, with 129 coming on the ground and 34 in passes. The Panthers punted once for 21 yards, and their guests five times for a 32.8-yard average. North Wood lost 2-2 fumbles and Northridge 2-3. snagging one. The defensive effort was led by senior Joe Abel with eight hits, while Justin Sellon added seven and Brown. Greenlee and Garl. each ‘six. Slump, Moser and McDonald each had five tackles, with McDonald getting a sack. Martin also had a sack. Elsewhere in the Northern Lakes Conference Friday. Goshen smothered Warsaw 60-15. Plymouth blanked Wawasce 53-0,
Frosh split tri-match
North Wood's freshman volleyball squad split in a tri-way match played September 24 at Warsaw. The Panthers tell to conference foe Warsaw. 3-15. 16-14. 12-15. Coach Shelly Sanders reported, "This was a great match. Too had we fell a little short. We were behind in the second game and came back to win. We fought hard for the third game, but they overpowered IIS.” Rachel Trinkley led in serves, at 12-13. while Ashley Mast went 1113 with an ace, and Laura Gillam 9-11 with two aces. Trinkley .added 18-19 spikes with five kills. 19 passes and a block, while Mast also had 26 passes and Gillam 23-24 sets to go along with a block. North Wood moved to 7-6 on the season (3-1 conference), with a 14-16. 15-13. 15-5 win over Wabash. Sanders stated. "This was also a great match. and Jimtown bested Concord 46-7 in a non-league outing. Goshen and Plymouth remain tied for the NI.C top spot, with 3-0 marks, while the Panthers arc next at 3-1. North Wood will host Dowagiac (Michigan) Friday night, October 2, with kickoff moved to 7p.m., due to the time difference. Friday will also be the Panthers' homecoming celebration, with coronation ceremonies set for halftime of the game.

Volleyball teams meet Heritage The North Wood eighth grade volleyball team topped Heritage in a match played September 22, taking the three-game event, 15-10, 715. 15-8. Nicole Fishburn was the high scorer for the winners. In the seventh grade matchup, the Panthers won the first match 15-12. 15-8 and lost the second, 615. 1-15. Amanda Gunn served seven points for NW, and, along with Layne Trinkley. played a great game at the net. Lyndsay Ballinger and Jessica Focht had consistent setting matches, and Kara Huff showed much improvement while contributing four points.
Kids determined in pedal pull
The Nappanee Apple Festival Pedal Pull took place Saturday, September 19, at the Supersweet Feeds parking lot. S. Main St. Prizes were awarded to the first, second, third and fourth place finishers in each age group, as follows. Ages 3-4. Dana Miller first. Staci George second, Sarah Lehman third and Lexi Brock fourth. Ages 5-6: Lacey George first, Andrew Campbell second. Jesse Morganthaler third and Aaron Blessing fourth. Ages 7-8: Kclcie Lehman first. Alii Heeler second. Caleb Sheets third and Cam Spitaels fourth. Victory for girls’ soccer Westvicw fell to the Panther girls' soccer team, 2-1, in a tight matchup played September 22. The Panthers scored at 21:55 on goal, and at 44:14. with Angie Beachy scoring on an assist from Tara Collins. The Panthers had 24 shots. 11 saves and six corners. Courtney Taylor scored an unassisted goal for Westvicw.

Ages 9-10: Brandon Blessing first. Kenton Hochsteller second. Jared Stump third and Kyle Kaufman fourth. The children in the 3-4-year-old division started out pulling 95 pounds and ended up pulling 155 pounds, while the 5-6-year-olds went to 325, the 7-8-year-olds to 400 and the 9-10-year-olds to 450.
Double-header for gridders at Bremen
The seventh and eighth grade football teams squared off against Bremen. Saturday. September 26. on the Lions' turf, with seventh bringing back a 20-6 win an' l eighth falling 14-6. Josh Greenlee picked up 27 yards in four carries for the Panthers, and added a 40-yard TD pass from Chad Davis. Phil Bcmiller added a 45-yard TD tote and Josh Sabo gathered in six yards in two carries, scored once from three yards out and caught a pass from Phil Bcmiller. Andrew Myers picked up an additional 21 yards in two carries and scored on a two-point conversion attempt. Rounding out the North Wood

Observers stated that it was very enjoyable to watch the youngsters pedal the tractor with the sled and weights attached. Many do so with teeth clenched and sheer determination in their faces. Those who have never watched the pedal pull arc encouraged to come out next year to see this event.

Jared Chesley had four hits, as did David Brown, while Chad Davis added three and Ben Adams and Joey Beer each two. Zac Mills had a fumble recovery lor the Panthers. For eighth. Troy Cox rushed for 97 yards and a TD, while Adam Burnworth added 67 yards on offense. Brandon Hall caught two passes for 48 yards, and Adam Leeper one for 25.
