NCT I Showcase ’ features seasoned local performers
What has now become a Nappanee Civic Theatre tradition is fast approaching, as the opening weekend of the Fall Showcase draws near. For the 1998 season, the company has selected “Mixed Nuts,” a contemporary comedy penned by Simon J. Donoghue and Nancy Manera. The series of performances will be launched Friday, September 25, with a 7:30p.m. curtain time.
Candidate for state treasurer visits festival
State Treasurer candidate Tim Berry was in Nappanee Saturday, to attend the Nappanee Apple Festival, and participate in the festival parade. “It is a great opportunity for me to meet the people of Nappanee and Elkhart County, and better understand their concerns and for them to become more acquainted with me,” Berry said. As Allen County Treasurer since 1990, Berry’s track record speaks to his qualifications for State Treasurer. He earned record interest income through efficient investment of Allen County tax dollars, and also cut the treasurer’s office operating expenses to achieve the lowest cost per capita operating budget of any of Indiana's 92-county treasurers. “We in Indiana must demand accountability, and experience to ensure responsible, safe investment strategies for Hoosier tax revenues,” said Berry. “I have been prepared by my experiences as Allen County Treasurer, to accept this leadership challenge. “State Treasurer is a position with direct power over the security of the dollars Hoosiers have entrusted to the state. Every dollar raised responsibly through interest income is another dollar that does not need to be raised in taxes, and another dollar in the pockets of Hoosier families. This is real tax relief.” Berry has traveled to nearly all of Indiana’s 92 counties during the

Another show will follow the evening of Saturday, September 26. as well as the following weekend, October 2-3. The production is christened a “showcase." as it allows audiences to come and see a talented cast of long-time NCT regulars, in roles that were offered to them via special director’s invitation. Richard Smith is directing this comedic spectacle, replete with
campaign, meeting voters and local elected officials from all corners of the state. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Association of Indiana Counties, former president of the Indiana County Treasurer’s Association, and was honored as Indiana’s Outstanding County Treasurer in 1995. He and his wife. Kim, are the parents of a two-year-old son, lan.

TIM BERRY Visits Nappanee
Scouts set recruitment night at new cabin
.The Nappanec Boy Scout Troop will have a recruitment night at their Boy Scout cabin. Thursday, September 25. 7p.m. All boys who are ages 11-18 (or who have completed fifth grade), are invited to attend this open house, which consists of a tour of the cabin, and an explanation of the scouting program. Being a part of the Boy Scout program includes weekend camp-
biting humor, outrageous physical antics and eccentric characters. He will be assisted in his directorial duties by his wife, Diana. The show opens with visitors being introduced to Michael Caldwell (Nik Havert), as he has arrived in New York City fresh from the Midwest. As he is settling into his new apartment, greeted in traditional New York style by landlady, Edna (Angela Jefferies), he finds himself surrounded by a host of intriguing but bizarre neighbors. There’s Phil Della Vecchia (Mandy Havert), whose caustic but sincere personality creates humorous conflict throughout the show, and serves as a perfect foil for Michael’s trials. Just down the hall there lives Tanya Romanov (Andrea Duesler), a Russian dancer with delusions of ballerina grandeur. Other unusual tenants who add to the hilarious mix include Marshall Ryan (Bob Walter), who aspires to a life of fame as an actor, but is often reduced to portraying strange caricatures. Michael also endures a night with Heather (Amy Wenger), a shallow, selfabsorbed model. To further complicate Michael’s situation, he often finds himself having aside chats with his rational self, “Mike,” (Jesse Pressler), and also finds himself plagued by the spectra of his sensible mother (Shirley Linville). As with all" Nappanee Civic Theatre productions, “Mixed Nuts” will take to the stage of the historic Community Park Pavilion, West Park, 500 N. Nappanee St., Nappanee. Tickets will be sold at the door, and are priced at $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. For more information, contact NCT at the pavilion, 219-773-3412.
