Bremen outclassed, as panthers notch big win

v North Wood’s varsity football Ipanthers evened their season Record at 1-1 in an impressive way, 3smothering host Bremen 39-6 friday, August 25, in a non-confer-outing. v The Panthers came out fighting, jafter last .week’s disappointing 2120 loss at Jimtown, scoring in every quarter. North Wood established dominance in the opening stanza, putting 13 points on the board, followed with 14 in the second, and six in each of the final [wo frames, to just one TD in the third for Bremen, with the Lions falling to 0-2 on the young season. Coach Rich Dodson reported, “Bremen is not at the level of a Jimtown this season, but we did a lot of things better than last week. What I especially liked was we were able to play more individuals to keep Huber and Roeder fresh. They played too many minutes at Jimtown. This way, we can build some depth.” Senior tailback Aaron Huber and junior QB Charlie Roeder were the stars of the show, scoring two and three times respectively. While Huber was carrying the ball 15 times for 137 yards and catching three passes for 26 more, Roeder was keeping the ball nine times for 68 yards and completing a; nifty 9-16 passes for 132 more. Huber also returned three punts for 105 yards and two kickoffs for 39, \shile punting once for the Panthers (40 yards). ‘The first score of the evening cSime at 7:20 of the opening quarter, with Roeder going in on a 10y&rd run. Todd McDonald’s boot f6r the PAT was good, and the visitors were up quickly, t Huber followed with a 17-yard scoring run at :35 of the first, with the kick failing. Roeder returned to the end zone in the second, at the 253 mark, scoring on a 24-yard nin. The attempt for two extra points was good, on a Roeder-to-Huber toss. punt return by Huber. Once again, the PAT kick failed, but the Panthers had a comfortable 27-0 halftime lead. Aric Bollenbacher broke into the scoring column in the third quarter, going in on a two-yard run at 8:59 for the Lions. The run for two failed, and NW held a 27-6 edge. The Panthers came back at 2:10 of the third, when Roeder ran it in from the one. North Wood’s PAT kick was off again, but Bremen’s guests had increased their lead to 33-6, headed into the final stanza. Corey Brown added the final touch for North Wood, scoring on an impressive 34-yard run at 11:29. The Panther kick was once again off the mark —a factor that could prove to be fatal in upcoming games. However, on this Friday night, the Panthers had enough for a convincing win. North Wood led the statistics game with 16 first downs, to 10 for their hosts. The Panthers totaled 397 yards of offense, while the Lions managed 217. North Wood punted three times, for a 42-yard average, with Bremen punting six times for a 29.3 average.
