North Wood High School’s Junior Varsity football players opened their season with a 14-7 win over visiting Jimtown. Chaz Scherer took the opening kick-off 80 yards to set up Jason Brenneman’s first touchdown run of six yards. Brenneman also added a three-yard touchdown run.

Tri-match for netters

The Panther volleyball varsity sfjlit its matches in a tri-matchup played at Lakeland last week. North Wood fell to Elkhart Memorial and topped host Lakeland. Against Memorial, the Panthers fell in two games, 10-15, 3-15. Zercher led in serves at 6-6 with an ace, and added 13-17 spikes with seven kills, a solo block and three digs. Erin Newcomer was good on 55 serves with an ace, while Harter added 3-3 serves and three digs. Kasy Chamberlin and Erin Newcomer each had 27 sets, combining for 14 assists, while Natalie Will had 13-17 spikes with six Panther ticket information... North Wood High School will be participating in the Northern Lakes Conference “Day at the Dome,” Saturday, September 12, in Indianapolis. The Panthers will square off against Goshen at 4:30p.m., in the RCA Dome. Tickets for the game are priced at $7 per seat, if purchased in advance at the North Wood High School Athletic Office. Tickets at the gate will cost $9. Wawasee, Northridge, Plymouth, Warsaw, Concord and St. Joe (non-conference) will also participate in the day-long activities.

Linksters fall at Plymouth The girls’ varsity golf team of NWHS fell to Plymouth, 204-199, in a meet held August 27, at the Plymouth Country Club. The loss dropped the Panthers to 7-1 on the season (l-l conference), while Plymouth moved to 10-2 (2-1). Pacing the Panthers was Michelle Taylor at 46, followed by Jill Vanßruaene at 47, Mandy Gerber 53, Lindsay Detwiler 58 and Cori Neff 64. Lindsay Gast, Erin Cox and Lori Green tied for medalist honors for Plymouth, each with 49. The NW junior varsity golfers also fell to their hosts, 252-218, with Sarah Anderson taking medalist honors for the Panthers, at 56. Kristen Stichter followed with 58, Megan Sloat 66, April Flickenger 72 and Nicole Miljer 77. Liz Adams was low for Plymouth with a 52.

Fairfield first victim Fairfield became the first victim of the Panther varsity volleyball team, with North Wood handling the Falcons in two games, 15-7, 15-8, in a match played last week at Fairfield. Jessica Yoder and Erin Newcomer both went 12-12 in serving, while Natalie Will and Amy Zercher added 8-8 each. Will had three aces and Zercher one. In addition, Kasey Chamberlin had 28 sets and 17 assists, and 1618 spikes with six kills, as well as six digs, while Newcomer added 28 sets and 12 assists. Will also had 16-18 spikes with 12 kills, three solo blocks and six digs and Zercher 18-20 spikes with 12 kills, two solo blocks and eight digs. Rounding out the Panther stats were Jessica Yoder with 9-11 spikes with two kills and a solo block, and Sarah Harter had five digs. In JV action with Fairfield, the Panthers moved to 2-3 on the season with a two-game, 15-13,15-11 victory. Angie Zentz and Anna Metz led serving, at 8-8 each, combining for three kills. Metz also had 5-5 spikes with four kills and three digs, while Andrea Atkinson was 6-6 in serving. Katie Chamberlin added 14 sets with six assists, Amy Gunn eight sets with two assists and two digs, Carol Duncan 8-10 spikes with seven kills and two solo blocks, Myra. Baumgartner 7-10 spikes with four kills and two solo blocks and Michelle Houck five digs.

Slip by Memorial NorthWood’* varsity tennis team slipped by Elkhart Memorial 3-2, in a match played August 27 on the Panther courts. Peter Metz, playing at the No. 1 singles position, topped Nathan Berkel 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, while Walt Fales won at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3, over * Justin Delucennay. Eric Reynolds fell to Chad Vanzke at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. In doubles, the team of Chet Walters/Matt Sitek fell 6-4, 6-3, while the No. 2 team of Nick Abel/Sean Clem won 6-3, 6-1. In JV action, Keith Fishbum lost 7-5, 6-3, while Anthony McClung won 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 and Chris McClung was victorious 6-1, 7-5 and 8-0. The win moved the Panthers to 1-1 on the season.
