The Last Word...
by Laurie Lechlitner Did you ever notice that most pets reflect their owners? For instance, our dog is rather portly, a bit sloppy at times, and has spider webs in his doghouse. He’s the dingy intellectual type —Mr. Peabody without the spectacles. The immaculate, white-haired woman next door walked by with her new puppy. They both have the regal strut of royal personages, proud of their heritage. Snowball descended from a line of Eskimo Spitz show dogs. With manicured nails and high-heeled paws, she walks her owner on a red leash both morning and evening. Both hold their long snouts in the air. Charley owns a bulldog named Dot. Actually, her Christian name is Dorothy. She has the square jaw and pushed-in face of her owner. Both smoke Dutch Master cigars. The other evening we were having a backyard barbecue for the neighbors. Our good friend Su Wan showed up with her Siamese cat, Sing-Sang. The cat was dressed in a gray fur evening gown and diamond collar. Su wore a skin-tight spandex jumpsuit (basic black), giving her the long, sleek look of a feline. “Nice outfit,” snorted Pot-bel-lied Pete. His pug nose and pointed ears gave him the look of the Hampshires he raises out on the farm. Gail came bringing a mousesized portion of cheese squares. Her children own a rat named Harold. “I’m so busy from my maze of activity, I’m dizzy,” she squeaked, twitching her nose in nervous anticipation, her beady little eyes scanning the crowd. She scampered into a lawn chair behind a pine tree .and we didn’t see her for the rest of the evening. “I just love your new permanent!” I exclaimed, surveying Mademoisselle Dußlanc in a halo of black ringlets framing her long face. “And how is your French poodle, Fee Fee, after her gall bladder operation?” asked my husband, Brian, with real concern. “She had a wee bit of trouble at first. But she is doing very well now. Monsieur,” Mademoiselle answered in a throaty whisper. Ed Heffer was moody that evening. “My cow, Eleanor, won’t give enough milk to wet a cat’s whiskers,” he said.

Emma Mae clucked with laughter at Ed’s dilemma. “You oughta raise chickens,” she asserted with fork in hand, as she pecked at her plate. “That’s just ducky!” exclaimed Malory while waddling past. “We entered Donald in the Ugly Duckling Contest at the county fair. First prize is a trip to Disney World. Do you think we’ll win?” “The answer is nay,” Fred Gallop spoke up, shaking the mane of blonde hair that hangs down his back. Fred’s a free spirit who speaks his mind. “That duck of yours is as nondescript as an old

main. I’m entering my horse, Hugo, in the barrel races.” We waved good-bye to our friends when the evening was over. “Drive carefully,” my husband barked, as Ed Heffner pulled his green John Deere tractor from our driveway. “It sure was a fun evening, wasn’t it?” I glowed in the aftermath, jerking my head to clear a patch of vision obstructed by my shaggy bangs. “We sure are a group of party animals,” Brian laughed, “Yeah,” I reflected, “literally.”
