NPD welcomes Kristina Lehman
By Merrie Chapman Building A Better Community... (This continues the series of articles highlighting individuals in our community who give willingly and freely of themselves for the betterment of all who live here. I hope you will come to know and appreciate each of them as I have.) Kristina Lehman has been added to the ranks of Nappanee Police Officers. While Connie Bellman paved the way as the first female officer, Lehman is the first to wear the uniform full time. Having already completed 40 classroom and hands on hours of pre-basic training, Lehman will attend the Indiana State Police Academy in July. Currently she patrols with other full time officers and will not be required to ride alone until she has successfully completed work at the academy. In addition, all officers are required to undergo 16 hours of general training. The classes are offered at alternate sites throughout northern Indiana. Kristina read an article announcing that the NPD was looking for new cadets. She had always toyed with the idea but says she never seriously considered it. “I have always been amazed,” says Lehman, “at people who can say from ari early age ‘I want to be...”’ That absolution is something Lehman never realized until she read the application for Nappanee Police Officers. “I read that they needed someone who could deal with loud decibel sounds,” she says. “And someone who could deal with people
