HER SHARE—Panther junior Amy Zercher cuts her share of the net following Saturday's sectional championship win at Wawasee. The Panthers host their own regional this Saturday at the Pit, meeting NLC rival Plymouth for the chance to advance to semi-state. In two sectional outings, Zercher totaled 35 points for Coach Steve Neff's varsity Panthers. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the championship game Saturday. North Wood’s girls' varsity basketball team closed out its regular season with a convincing 62-19 victory over outclassed Jimtown, moving the Panthers to an outstanding 19-1 mark for the season, and a perfect 6-0 in Northern Lakes Conference. Lincoln spoils Panther debut The North Wood Middle School wrestling team fell to Lincoln in its first outing of the season. February 18, at Wakarusa. The Panthers came out on the short end of the 75-31 score. Winning by fall for the Panthers: Bret Beehler, Darin Dodson, Dustin Croy and Chad Strange. Troy Cox won by major decision and Chad Davis won a hard-fought match. Brandon Bickel and Mike Hertsel won exhibition matches. The meet was Lincoln’s 11th of the season. Travel league sets tryouts The Nappanee Travel League tryouts will are scheduled for March 7-14-21 and 28, at the North Wood High School Activities Center. All interested players who will be between the ages of 10-12 before June 1, 1998, should plan to attend. To be considered for the team, a player must attend two of the four practices. Girls take four contests from Goshen teams
North Wood Middle School’s girls’ basketball teams completed a clean sweep of Goshen, February 17, with the Panthers taking all four games played by seventh and eighth grade teams. Eighth “A” won 40-21, moving to 5-3 on the season, while dropping Goshen to 1-5. Katie Chamberlin led the Panthers with 18 points, while Allison Taylor was also in double figures with 10. Ashley Egging and Lee Ann Davidhizar each scored four and Kristin Speed and Sam Schefer each two. Eighth “B” slipped by Goshen 18-17, moving to 2-3. Frosh close out season with NLC tourney
Plymouth erased the North Wood freshman boys’ basketball team’s hopes of a Northern Lakes Conference Tournament crown with a 46-39 first-round win February 14. Sean Clem led the Panthers with 16 points and a team-high four rebounds, while, Mike Blosser added nine, Willy Will six points and three assists and Justin Titus four rebounds. Friday, March 6 at 6p.m. Lakeland (5-13) and Wawasee (4-14) will open tournament action Tuesday, March 3 at 6p.m., with West Noble (5-13) and Northridge (16-3) meeting in the second Tuesday night game at 7:30. The winners of those games will clash in Friday’s second contest at 7:30. Winners return Saturday, March 7, 7:30p.m., to compete for the sectional title.

FIRST PLACE—Over the past weekend, the MidContinent Conference held its NCAA conference meet at the Natatorium at Indianapolis. Valparaiso University, participated in the three-day event, with the girls' team finishing third and the boys' team placing fourth. Erin (Nikki) Tobias, pictured, finished first for Valpo in the 200 freestyle, second in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. She also swam on three relay teams, earning two seconds and a third. In winning the 200, Valpo's sophomore, Tobias, set a new school record time of 1:55.15. The girls' team is coached by Dan Carl. Carlea Howard had nine points and eight rebounds to pace the Panthers, while Leah Harman added five points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Leslie Yeager added six points and Mary Egging four. Seventh “B” completed the sweep with a 24-7 victory. The Panthers, led by Renee Jensen with six points, moved to 4-1 on the young season. Karla Yoder scored five for North Wood, while Chelsey Bowers added four, Roxanne Faulkner three and Stephanie Hershberger, Corinne Shields and Jessica Bums, each two.

SIGNS LETTER-OF INTENT—Jamie Gill, a member of the North Wood girls' basketball sectional tournament championship team, recently signed a letter of intent to play college volleyball at Grace, Warsaw. Jamie is pictured in sectional action Saturday at Wawasee. Gill, daughter of Stan and Linda Gill, Nappanee, has been a standout performer for the Panther "Red Slam." Her scholarship will cover $5,000 of the approximate $15,000 yearly tuition at Grace. Panther Coach Peggy Bough stated, ‘Gill was a great leader on the floor. Her dedication to the sport has gotten her where she is. Grace is an excellent choice for her, one that should give her a good opportunity to play." Jamie is a three-year letter winner with the volleyball team, which captured three sectional and a regional title in her three season, and finished those seasons with an impressive 7723 mark. She has been named Ail-Conference and AllSectional twice and earned MVP and Outstanding Offense awards at NWHS. She also earned honorable mention Academic All-State recognition. She plans to major in elementary education at Grace, stating, I love being around kids. They're a lot of fun and it's a great chance to be a role model. Coaching could also be in the future for me."
