'News' continues in spirit of fairness
* (Information for the 100-75 and 50-years ago segments has been researched and posted by Mary Knobel. The Advance-News staff wishes to thank her for her contribution to the column) 100 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 23, 1898 This week the News begins number one of volume twenty. It is not expected that this will be cause for any special promises for the future course of the News. It has no broken promises during the past ten years while the present proprietor has been in charge. The paper now seems to have the approbation of the widest and best constituency in its history, all of which is sufficient testimony that it has always been, on an average, equal to the occasion, when any occasion required. An effort to get the news current at home and abroad, and in a spirit of fairness and truthfulness, has brought from its longtime readers many encomiums. The county commissioners will go over the line of the proposed new electric road, which is to be run from Elkhart to Goshen, and show the railway constructors on which part of the highway to place the tracks. So far as concerns those people who use the highway, it won’t make much difference which side of the road the tracks are on; it will be just as much of a nuisance one place as another to the driver of teams.

The price of Eskimo pie has been reduced from ten cents to five Crime of the Week This week’s Crime of the Week comes from the murder files of the South Bend Police Department. On October 28, 1991, 8:13p.m., Robert Holdworth, a local cab driver, was sent to pick up a fare i the 2600 block of Newcome Street. Police believe that this was a false call. Holdsworth’s cab was seen sitting on Newcome Street, facing east with the left rear passenger door open. Police feel that someone entered the cab with the intention of robbing the driver and pulled a gun. When Holdworth turned to face the person the suspect pulled the trigger and shot him point blank in the face. Police were called at 9p.m., and found the cab crashed into an embankment in the 100 block of South Meade Street, with the driver behind the wheel. If you know who is responsible for killing Robert Holdworth, and call Crime Stoppers this week, you could receive a reward of SI,OOO upon arrest or indictment. Remember, you can call Crime Stoppers about this or any other felony crime or fugitive. Be a Crime Stopper, call 1-800-342-STOP. You will be given a code number and no one will ask you name. Crime Stoppers does not have caller ED. Crime Stoppers, it works!
