Host Goshen jumped out to a 13-6 first-quarter edge and continued to hold an advantage over the visiting North Wood Panthers Friday night, taking a 56-42 Northern Lakes Conference ryThe win drops Coach Dan Gunn and crew to 10-5 on the season, 23 in conference competition, while the Redskins moved to 13-3 (3-2). It was the 400th career victory for Goshen Coach Mike Sorrell, who is in his 13th season at Goshen. By halftime. Goshen was up 3019, and the hosts held a 44-33 edge after three, moving on to the 14point margin of victory. Leading the offensive charge for the winners were Jon Swartz, Thomas Kline and Phil Mikel, with 16. II and 10 respectively. For the Panthers, Bobby Brown led the charge with 13 points, while Eric Zell was also in double figures with 10. Jake Yoder chipped in six points, Aaron Huber and Todd Coffin each four, Nick Bradley three and Darin Nunemaker two. The Panthers were cold from three-point range, going 0-8, while Goshen nailed 3-8. North Wood won the rebounding game, 36-26, with Zell hauling down 13 to pace the Panthers, while Bradley added seven and Brown five. The Panthers committed 13 turnovers, to Goshen's nine. Take NLC crown, warm up for sectional tourney
The No. 1-rated NorthWoocT girls' basketball team added three more \ietims to the list last week, taking Northern Lakes Conference rival Warsaw, 62-44, and following with two wins at the Penn Invitational, lopping Portage 6856 and Crown Point 50-39. North Wood's seventh grade girls' basketball teams continued their win streaks with victories over Heritage, in action played last week at North Wood Middle School. For seventh “A” the Panther scoring attack was led by Leslie Yeager and Andrea Jenkins with six points each, while Kami Dole and Carlea Howard each added four and Kelsey Newcomer and Trina Anderson two each. North Wood won the contest 26-10 to move to 5-0 on the young season. Seventh "B" moved to 3-0 with a 33-15 win. Karla Yoder, Renee Jensen and Chelsey Bowers each scored six. and Jensen added a team-high seven rebounds. Eighth "A" fell to 3-2 with a one-point 23-22 loss at Heritage. Katie Chamberlin scored 13 to pace the offense for North Wood, while Allison Taylor added five, and Rachel Trinkley and Lee Ann Davidhizar each had two. Heritage jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but the Panthers fought back to tie the contest at 19-19 by the end of the third quarter. The Panthw-s had opportunity to fire the last shot of the contest, but couldn't get rid of the ball before the buzzer. Eighth “B” also lost. 26-19, moving to a 1-2 mark. Warsaw, falling to 12-6 (5-1), was led by Sam Wideman with 17 points. Will also dished out an impressive 10 assists in the contest. In the JV game, the Panthers slipped by 28-24, improving to 125 on the season. Warsaw is 13-5. Erin Newcomer led the Panthers with 3 points, while Andee Morris added six and Katy Carlton five. In the first contest on Saturday at Penn, the Panthers took a 19-6 first-quarter lead over Crown Point and, in spite of a dismal four-point output in the second, never looked back, leading 23-17 at halftime and 36-25 after three. Two Panthers were in double figures, with Klotz scoring 14 and Zercher 10. In addition, Zercher had eight rebounds and six assists, while Will added five rebounds and six assists to the stats. Gill scored eight, Callander and Will each seven, and Glingle and Collins two each to round out the offense. Crown Point, 11-7, was led by Sarah Little with a game-high 17 points. The Panther JV fell to Crown Point, 30-21, with Lindsay Carlin pacing the offense with six points.

In their second contest of the day, North Wood held a slim 19-13 edge over Portage at the first stop, outscored their opponents 24-7 in the second, to take control, slipped a bit in the third, 11-19 and were outscored in the fourth 14-17, but held on for the 12-point win and moved to 18-1 on the season. In that game, Amy Zercher, Natalie Will and Lori Dawn Klotz led the scoring, with 19, 17 and 14 points respectively, while Gill added seven, Collins six and Glingle five. Will also handed out a whopping 10 assists and grabbed four rebounds, while Zercher was strong on the boards, hauling down 10 rebounds, while also dishing, out eight assists. The JV also topped Portage, 3322, with Erin Newcomer pacing the attack with 14 points. The all-tournament team included Natalie Will, with 24 points, nine rebounds, eight steals and 16 assists; Amy Zercher, with 29 points, 18 rebounds, six steals and 14 assists, and Lori Dawn Klotz, with 28 points, seven rebounds, four steals and six assists. North Wood is now preparing for sectional tournament action, which opens February 17, at Wawasee.
