Sing praises of local violin maker
(Information for the 100-75 and 50-years ago segments has been researched and posted by Mary Knobel. The Advance-News staff wishes to thank her for her contribution to the column) 100 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 9, 1898 Mr. Amos Young, near town, has brought himself into local prominence by his mechanical genius in making a violin. He made his first violin when he was 14 years of age. The third one he has made, and the one to which this item refers, is considerably above the ordinary violins, as such instruments are valued. Not only rich in tone, but the model, which is the maker’s own, is handsome, and the mechanical construction fine. The instrument is made of curly maple, excepting the top, which is from pine brought from Germany some 40 years ago in the form of a tool chest. The time it required to make the instrument was one hundred hours. What came near being another fatality in the log yards of Coppes Bros. & Zook happened last Saturday, when a log rolled over the person of Master Walter Sunday. The lad, who is but 9 years old, lives adjoining the mill yards. On this occasion he was about the yard and watching the teamsters unload logs. One of the logs on a pile was dislodged and rolled over the boy. The only thing that seemed to have saved his life being crushed out was, that the log was crooked and the bow side
Don't worry about double dose of 13th
Triskaidekaphobes be warned: You should be especially wary in the months of February and March this year. Superstitious people may want to avoid black cats, opening umbrellas inside of buildings, breaking mirrors, walking under ladders and other “bad luck” activities, because the 1998 calendar provides back-to-back Friday the 13 th in those months. Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13. The last time the Gregorian calendar offered this double dose of bad luck was in 1987. Including 1998, it has happened 11 times this century. Because February is 28 days long—except during a leap year—February and March are the only consecutive months in which this phenomenon occurs. People reallysnould not be concerned about Friday the 13th in consecutive months, according to Terri Bonebright, DePauw University assistant professor of psychology. She said people’s fears about Friday the 13th are just another human superstition “It all revolves around superstition,” Bonebright said. “In the case of Friday the 13th, many people have been told it will be a bad day, so they selectively remember all the bad events that occurred throughout the day. On the other hand, on a Monday the 9th, for example, something bad may hap-

came up as it passed over him. The boy is badly but not fatally hurt. Messrs. Ephraim and John Emmert have bought the dairy business of Mr. Adam Hartman, north of town. The purchase includes the milch cows, wagons and appurtenances, and the good will of the route. 75 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 8, 1923 At an adjourned meeting of the town board on Monday evening an ordinance was passed authorizing the Nappanee school district to issue and sell notes or bonds with which to procure money to purchase the school building. The property is now held in trust by A.L. Miller, as at the time of the erection of the high school building the law only allowed school districts to go in debt two percent of the assessed valuation, which did not furnish near enough money to erect the building. Since that time anew statue has went into effect quadrupling the assessed valuation, which is now about $4,000,000. At the annual meeting, held recently, a plan was adopted whereby members of the Mutschler Benevolent Ass’n in case of sickness, will be taken care of for twenty-nine weeks, out of each year. All employees of the Mutschler factory are eligible to membership in the association. If you get your shoes half soled, a pair of rubber heels, buy a pair of
pen, but people will not link that day to bad luck.” Throughout history, people have wanted explanations for the events affecting them and their lives. According to Bonebright. superstition often provides a vehicle to rationalize unexplained events or circumstances for which the person is ultimately responsible. Bonebright cites the example of a student who takes a test and fails it. If he or she sees a black cat or some other superstitious event before the test, he or she might say, ‘I flunked the test because I didn’t wear my lucky hat.’ The person should actually take responsibility for his or her actions and say, ‘I flunked the test because I didn’t study enough.’” Bonebright said she is amazed how superstition carries over to many otner things in society. She said she recently stayed in a newly-built hotel in Philadelphia without a 13th floor. “I was surprised to see that, eVen in a newly-constructed building, there would not be a 13th floor,” Bonebright said. “This association between the 13th floor and tragedy is not bom out of reality.” Bonebright said most people who are superstitious of Friday the 13th do not have a serious problem, but she said if superstition rules a person’s life, he or she should seek professional help. According to Underwood Dudley, DePauw professor of mathematics and author of two books, including a recent one on numerology, Friday the 13th has an interesting role in the calendar. The Gregorian calendar, which is currently in use, operates on a 400-year cycle, so that years repeat themselves exactly during

each 400-year period. Thus, 1998 has the same days as 1598 did in some of the world at that time. The Gregorian calendar was not introduced to the American colonies until 1752. Dudley also offers the following trivia about Friday the 13th: ' The 13th of a month is more likely to fall on a Friday the 13th than on any other day. In each 400-year cycle of the Gregorian calendar, 170 years have one Friday the 13th, 171 have two, and 59 have three (including 1998). It is impossible to have a year with no Friday the 13th, or a year with four or more Fridays the 13th.
