NW classes join forces; define teamwork
By Merrie Chapman Bruce Cannaday’s Graphic Communication Department at North Wood High School teamed up with Alan Burt’s Business Management and Marketing class last semester for a two part project. Burt gave his class the assignment of creating a logo to represent all the students at North Wood High School. The catch—it had to present an image of the student body without relating to sports. Students were told to interview their peers, parents and people throughout the community and allow them to vote on the various designs. “It was interesting,” says Mr. Burt, “because the design they felt was the best wasn’t what the community wanted. It taught them they had to market what the community wanted, not just what they thought was a good idea.” Students spent 15 weeks writing slogan after slogan and continued to interview teens and adults at football games, tailgate parties, church and school. In all the teens conducted 847 interviews. “But it was a lot of fun,” says Steven Stouder, business management and marketing student. He and his peers took great pride in

WORKING TOGETHER—The Graphic Communications and Business Management and Marketing classes at North Wood High School have finished a common project. Students from Burt Alan's BMM class spent nearly 15 weeks marketing slogans and insignias for the T-shirts that would represent the total student body without relation to any sports. Bruce Cannaday's GO was responsible for designing the crest.
their hard work. During that period of trial and error they were also presenting those interviewed with various designs from Bruce Cannaday’s Graphic Communication Department. Each insignia seemed to be THE ONE but all were returned for alterations'and color adjustments. Finally a clear picture was beginning to form. One slogan stood out with the majority of those interviewed. And the designs had been quickly narrowed down, then modified and recirculated until one clear favorite could be determined. The end product was an NW insignia resembling that of a super hero. The writing underneath says it all: “A Tradition of Excellence.” Phase one was complete. Next the project went to the Graphic Communications Department. Their job was make the shirt after both the slogan and design had been approved. Every shirt brought the promise of a finished product as the group sent the sample back to Business Management and Marketing. Burt’s class would critique the product and send it back for more adjustments.

The end product was an NW insignia resembling that of a super hero. North Wood appears arched across the top of the emblem and the writing underneath says it all: “A Tradition of Excellence.” Now the first semester is behind them and the passing grades are already recorded on the school registers. Yet those former students are returning to sell the product they worked so hard to create.
