‘Swish’ earns crown; Zercher named MVP

The North Wood girls’ varsity basketball team moved to an impressive 14-1 mark by taking top honors in its own invitational tournament, held Saturday, January 24, in the Panther Pit. The Panthers opened the tournament with an 82-50 win over Whitko, and took the title round over Prairie Heights, 70-41. Against Whitko, the “Black Swish” jumped out to a 19-11 firstquarter advantage, extended the lead to 37-24 at halftime, and surged ahead 66-38 by the end of the third period of play. Top scoring honors went to Amy Zercher, with a season-high total of 27. Natalie Will and Lori Dawn Klotz were also in double figures, with 19 and 12 respectively. Rounding out the offensive effort were Jamie Gill with eight, Angie Callander six, Heidi Collins and Tiff Glingle with four each and Joanna Bove with two. Whitko was led by Starkweather with 17 and Rowland with 10. In the second contest, Prairie Heights took out Triton 61-51, with Chris Scott leading the Trojans, while Sarah Gordon and

Brandy Myers led Heights with 36 and 12 respectively. Whitko followed with a consolation round victory over Triton, 48-33, with Rowland dumping in 26 more and Starkweather adding 17. Triton was led by Megan Sarber with 10. In the title matchup, the Panthers led at all stops, 19-3, 3214, 47-26 and the final 29-point advantage. North Wood had three players in double figures, with Amy Zercher, Lori Dawn Klotz and Angie Callander scoring 15, 10 and 10 respectively. Also scoring were Heidi Collins with nine, Jamie Gill eight, Natalie Will seven, Joanna Bove six, Tiff Glingle four and Annie Zell one. Heights was led by Gordon and Dailey with 13 each. At tournament’s end, Triton stood at 5-10 on the season, while Whitko is 7-7 and Prairie Heights 12-5. Arizona Diamondbacks coming to Coveleski

The South Bend Silver Hawks announced last week that they will play host to their major league affiliate, the Arizona Diamondbacks, at Coveleski Stadium, Monday, June 29. Warnken competes at Ft. Wayne Julia Warnken, an eighth grade student at North Wood Middle School, competed in the January 23-25 Ft. Wayne Swim Invitational, as a member of the Racer X team of South Bend. Julia finished first in the 200 individual medley at 2:08,92, 200 breast at 2:27.73, 100 breast at 1:08.53, 200 butterfly at 2:11.27 and 100 fly at 59.22, and fourth in the 400IM at 4:33.58.

Frosh compete in conference action

Northern Lakes Conference basketball action found the freshman boys’ basketball team splitting last week, falling to Warsaw 59-39 on Monday, January 19, and topping Concord 38-35 January 22. The frosh stand 10-5 headed into this week’s competition. Against Warsaw, the Panthers were led by Mike Blosser with 11 points, three assists and four steals, while Sean Clem and Jeff Baumgartner each added nine points, and Baumgartner added a team-high six rebounds. Justin Titus was also good for five rebounds and Willy Will had five assists. In the Concord win, Justin
