Valley falls to frosh Tippecanoe Valley was the victim of a 36-25 basketball win for the North Wood freshman girls’ team. The contest, played January 19, moved the frosh to 13-1 on the season while dropping Valley to 67. Kasey Chamberlin led the Panthers with 15 points and four steals. Natalie six points, six rebounds ana three steals, Cort Sandy four points and three assists, Tara Collins five points, five rebounds and four steals, Myra Baumgartner five rebounds and Angie Zcntz three points and two steals. Concord faces Panther squads The North Wood Middle School boys’ basketball teams squared off against Concord last week, with the following results. Eighth “A” moved to a 12-4 record with a 39-29 victory over their visitors. Scott Hill pumped in 12 points and grabbed five rebounds to pace the Panthers, while Jesse Fink and Rory Clouse each added six, with Clouse also taking a team-high eight rebounds. Ryan Mast had five points and Five rebounds, Dan Santistevan four points, five steals and three assists, and Joey Sheets and Jason Rupp each three points. Eighth “B” fell to Concord, in spite of double-figure scoring by Dustin Croy and Jeremy Greenlee, with 13 and 10 points respectively. Bucky Bonboune added five, Peter Hawn three, Chad Borkholder two and Brody single points, while Jake Rogers added four assists, and Hawn hauled down eight rebounds and grabbed four steals. The Panthers are 10-4 on the season. Seventh “A” was a 37-26 winner, moving to 12-4, while dropping Concord to 8-3. Ryan Bradley and Matt Mailioux led the scoring output, with eight and six points respectively, while Brandon Hall, Kevin Yoder, Adam Leeper and Adam Bumsworth each added four. For seventh “B” Andy Hostetter had 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal to lead the Panthers to a 34-30 win. North Wood advanced to 8-6 on the season, while dropping the Minutemen to 5-8. Joel Richard had seven points, Kyle Martin six points and two steals, Josh Estepp five points, Jeff Hertsell four points, three rebounds and three steals and Peter Widmer five rebounds. Todd Kk>tz and Brant Paulus were credited with tough defensive play for the Panthers, who won the game by hitting 6-7 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Celtics close out undefeated season

The Celtics completed an undefeated season by taking their 10th and 11th victories in the Panther Basketball League season-end tournament last week, topping the Spurs and the Bulls. In the tourney’s opening round, the Celts topped the Spurs 35-15, closing out the Spurs’ season at 37. Trent Chupp led the Spurs with six points, while teammates Matt Myers and Payne Tatich each scored three, Nate Cline two and Jeremy Stump one. For the victors, Phil Mailloux and Jason Vanlue had nine and eight points respectively, with Wes BeMiller adding six, Landon Rupp and Andy Flickinger each three, Josiah Gaut, Kyle Hunsberger and Clayton Cook two apiece and Luke Hershberger one. In the tournament’s next clash, the Pistons were eliminated by the Bulls, 25-17, with the Pistons closing their season at 3-7, while the Bulls moved tc 4-6. Andrew Huber scored six to pace the Pistons, with Justin Tierney and Chris Herr each adding four, Landon Martin two and Michael Ramirez one. For the winners, Trevor Shields pumped in 12 points, followed by Nate Taylor with five, Aaron Hahn four, and Dan Schmucker and Derrick Santistevan each two. In the title matchup, the Celtics

Milford, Fairfield foes for junior high Panthers

Nappanee Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade boys’ basketball teams continues their season January 22, with competition from Fairfield and Milford. The eighth “A” team topped Fairfield, 47-34, led by Scott Hill’s 16 points and three assists. Dan Santisteven added nine points and two steals, and Rory Clouse eight points and seven rebounds. Rounding out the Panther scoring were Pat Sonner with six, Ryan Mast four and Jesse Fink and Jeff Hochstetler each with two. The win moved the Panthers to 13-4 on the season. Eighth “B” fell to Milford, 4634, dropping their record to 10-5. Mike Klotz led the attack with 11 points and six rebounds, with Chad Burkholder adding five, Dustin Cray and Jeremy Greenlee each four, and Peter Hawn, Mike Hertsel and Casey Yerger each two. The seventh grade “A” team whipped Fairfield, 53-17, moving their mark to 13-4. Troy Cox and Brandon Hall were in double figures with 10

Jim Mattem spoke on behalf of the basketball staff, stating, “I would like to thank all players, coaches, referees and parents, for making the Panther League a success this season. I really appreciated all of your time and energy spent in laying the foundation for North Wood basketball. The league could not have functioned without the cooperation and support of parents and volunteers. “I would also like to thank Wakarusa Elementary Principal Larry Nafziger and Woodview Elementary Principal Peggy Hill, for all their help and cooperation this season. I would also like to thank all the custodians from Wakarusa and Woodview Elementary Schools. Without help fromf' George Wileman, Paul Mullet, Dave Copeland and Roger Keiser, the gyms would not have been ready for games and practices. Again, a big thanks for making this a great season for the kids.”

Jimmies, Chargers join Panther list of victims

Jimtown and Elkhart Memorial became victims of the North Wood varsity boys’ basketball team last week, with the Panthers topping the Jimmies 49-43 Friday, and the Chargers 86-57 Saturday, in back-to-back non-conference contests played at the Panther Pit. The wins move the Panthers to an impressive 9-3 on the season, while Jimtown slipped to 6-5 and Memorial to 3-10. Friday night the Panthers doubled Jimtown’s output in the first quarter, 14-7, led .22-13 at halftime, overcame a 19-12 Jimtown output in the third, hanging on 3432, and taking charge in the final stanza to come away with the sixpoint win. “We’re fortunate to win when we don't play any better than we did tonight,’’ stated Coach Dan Gunn. “We didn’t seem to be mentally ready to play. To play varsity basketball, you have to rebound inside. They got the loose balls and rebounds, and the team that works harder usually gels those.” Leading the Panther offense were Aaron Huber and Bobby Brown, with 13 and 11 respectively, followed by Eric Zell with eight, Charlie Rocder seven, Jake Yoder and Nie Bradley each with four and Chad Martin with two. The Jims out rebounded their hosts 30-22, with Zell grabbing four and Yoder and Roeder each three. Leading the scoring output for the Jimmies was Nate Baughman with 13. Jimtown turned the ball over 17 times, to eight for the Panthers. TAKE CHARGERS The Panthers had five players in double figures against Memorial on Saturday, with Jake Yoder scoring a career-high 15 points. Bobby Brown paced the attack with 20. followed by Eric Zell and Charlie Roeder, each with 12 and Aaron Huber adding 11. Rounding out the Panther scoring output were Nic Bradley and Chad Martin, each with six and Todd Coffin with four. Memorial was led by Vemard Malone with a game-high 21, while Mike Cooley added 12. The Panthers connected on 4-10 from three-point land, with Yoder, Brown, Huber and Bradley each snaring one. “What a Jekyll and Hyde,” reported Gunn of his team, and its game as compared to Friday’s performance. “I think it would have to be one of the better performances we’ve had.” North Wood was up 17-15 at the first quarter stop, 43-27 at halftime, and 62-40 after three, cruising to a 24-17 fourth-quarter advantage and the 29-point margin of victory. The Panthers were aggressive on the boards, out rebounding their guests 36-31, with Martin grabbing nine, Brown six and Zell six. Bradley also dished out eight assists. North Wood returns to Northern Lakes Conference action Friday, January 30, traveling to No. 1rated Plymouth. The Panthers host LaVille at the Pit on Saturday, January 31, in a non-conference showdown. JV tipoff for both contests is set for 6:15p.m. The Panther junior varsity also notched two more wins, moving to 8-4 on the season, topping Memorial 46-31 and Jimtown 5323. Against Memorial, Brock Doty, Aaron Hochstetler and lan Reed were in double figures, at 14, 13 and 10 respectively. Reed led the offensive onslaught over Jimtown, pumping in 23 points, with teammate Aaron Hochstetler adding eight.
