Is hobby greenhouse part of. future?
by Candice Kaminsky Elkhart County Master Gardener Christmas is behind us, and soon the seed catalogues will start to arrive. The dreaming and planning for next season’s garden will now begin! If you have always dreamed of a hobby greenhouse, maybe this is the year to make your dream come true. The first thing to do when planning your greenhouse is to choose your site carefully, checking with the local codes before you begin. Lay out the area where you are thinking of building with a rope or hose and watch the way the light hits that area for a day or two. If there are major light obstructions, such as large trees, hills or buildings, you may have to change your location. When you are doing this, also keep in mind a deciduous tree can actually be a help by keeping the strong summer sun from scorching your plants. Also, when planning a greenhouse, keep in mind the access to utilities. All greenhouses in Northern Indiana will need auxiliary heat and this often means electricity. Water will also be needed. The most common types of greenhouses are the conventional even span, a lean-to and a quonsetshaped greenhouse. The less common ones should also be considered. This would include a-frame, geodesic dome, pit and solar greenhouse. A conventional even span is a symmetrical house-shaped structure. The advantages of this type include: a lot of interior growing space, good selection of kits available; easy to enlarge and they admit the maximum amount of

light. A lean-to attaches to an existing structure, such as your home, bam or shed. The advantage of this type: utilities are easy to connect, and because of the shared wall, utility costs would be lower. If attached to your home, easy access is a plus, and you may have some solar heat gain. The quonset is a good option because they are so easy and inexpensive to construct. An a-frame is good if you want to grow tall, vining plants, such as cucumbers and tomatoes. It is also easy to construct and sheds snow! The dome-shaped greenhouse makes a really interesting structure in your garden. On the interior, you have a lot of space, but this is not a project for a beginner carpenter. A pit greenhouse has the benefit of the tempering effect of the earth on the greenhouse temperature. This is a really intriguing option—if you are thinking of a permanent structure look into this more. The solar greenhouse is designed to take the most advantage of the heart of the sun. A properlydesigned solar greenhouse with heat storage will greatly reduce your heat expenses. This option also deserves some research before you decide. No matter what type you decide to build, there are other elements of the greenhouse you will need to decide about. The foundation, floor, glazing, ventilation, utilities and heating. The type of foundation you choose will depend on how permanent you want your structure. For a simple quonset, or two by two frame, you could just stake it in place. You can also use four-by-

ORDINANCE NO. 1249 AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ORDINANCE NO. 907, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE CITY OF NAPPANEE ZONING ORDINANCE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE FOR THE PLACEMENT OF AND REGULATIONS FOR THE OPERATION OF TATTOO PARLORS. WHEREAS, The City of Nappanee Plan Commission has duly certified to the City of Nappanee Common Council that it has given a favorable recommendation and approved the proposal embodied in this form of Ordinance and did, after proper legal notice conduct a hearing on such proposal as provided by law on the 15th day of December, 1997. fours, or, for a more permanent structure, go down to the frost line with the foundation. Some even insulate the foundation to extend the growing season in the floor beds. Some may want a concrete floor for cleanliness, especially if you have a lean-to attached to your home. For the other types though, a walk-down-the-middle with natural beds on the sides is best. Glazing is an important part of your greenhouse. Glass is beautiful and has up to 90% light transmission, but it can break and there can be liability problems. Plastic sheeting is inexpensive, but a four-mil polyethylene will last only a few months. That may be fine if you are just starting plants for your garden. Polycarbonate has 80% light transmission, is much safer than glass, more insulating than glass and has been treated to reduce condensation. Ventilation is critical. Plants need really good air avoid diseases. You will neled vents at the top and bottom of the greenhouse. A fan is essential. You will definitely need water and electric in your greenhouse. A water line can be brought from your house. An inexpensive option for water is to have a 30-50-gallon plastic trash can and fill it with your garden hose. Before you begin, do lots of research. Send for information from manufacturers, use the internet and your library. There are many things to consider when building your greenhouse, but the satisfaction that comes from owning one is worth all the effort. Happy gardening!
