Goshen slips by for crown
Goshen put an end to North Wood’s hopes of winning the Goshen Holiday Tournament last week, with the host Redskins slipping by Coach Dan Gunn’s varsity Panthers in a low-scoring contest, 36-35. The two teams had earned the right to play for the crown by virtue of North Wood’s opening game win over Northridge Monday, 60-49, and Goshen’s victory over Wawasee in the second contest, 47-42. The Panthers and Raiders were tied at the first stop, 16-16, but North Wood pulled ahead by taking the second quarter 13-9, to lead 29-25 at halftime. A 13-13 thirdquarter tie kept the contest close, at 42-38 after three, but the Panthers won the final stanza 1811 to ice the 11-point win. Northridge had previously been undefeated, and were ranked No. 8 in Class 3A, but fell to 6-1, while the Panthers were advancing to 51 on the season. Bobby Brown and Charlie Roeder led the scoring attack for the Panthers, with 14 points each, while Eric Zell added eight, Aaron Huber and Jake Yoder each seven, Nic Bradley five, Chad Martin four and Todd Coffin one. On the night, North Wood hit 2244 from the field and 15-24 free throws, while Northridge shot 2345 and. 0-3. Yoder and Zell led the Panther rebounding, with seven and six respectively. In the third period, North Wood outscored their hosts 11-6, to take a 28-25 lead heading into the final period of play. However, Goshen took that frame 11 -7 to slip by with the win. It was Goshen’s 14th title in the 37th annual tournament. The 36 points were the fewest ever scored by a winning team in the championship contest, with the 71-point total the second-lowest. For the Panthers, Brown was the lone scorer in double figures, at 17, with Huber adding eight, Martin four, Zell three, and Roeder, Yoder and Bradley each one. North Wood could manage just 11-28 from the field and 12-23 free throws, while Goshen was 12-33 and 10-18. Thomas Kline led Goshen with 13 and Joe Swartz added 10, with Kline nailing the winning bucket with just three seconds remaining. The Panthers had a chance for a last-second shot, but a three-point attempt fell off the rim. The game put the Panther record at 5-2, while Goshen moved to 62. SEASON RESUMES—Eric Zell, a member of Coach Dan Gunn's varsity basketball team, heads to the bucket during recent action at the Panther Pit. Teammate Chad Martin watches for the score. The 6-6 senior center leads the Panthers back into action as the ’9B portion of the schedule kicks off Friday, January 9, when Northern Lakes Conference rival Northridge heads into the Pit.
