Smoking kills TO THE ADVANCE-NEWS: Parents—October 26-November 1 is'designated as Red Ribbon Week. The fbCrtsof’thiS week'is for your children to stay off drugs. Ibis is a wonderful commitment for students to make. However, many parents and students do not view tobacco as a terribly important drug to stay off when they compare it to crack, heroin, or even alcohol. The fact remains, however, that smoking kills more Americans than homicides, car wrecks, drunk driving, fires, alcohol, cocaine, heroin and AIDS combined! In fact, when you total up all the deaths caused by smoking each year, you will find 174,000 die from heart disease, 143,000 die from cancer, 83,000 die from lung disease, 26,000 die from stroke, and 4,000 die from other smokingrelated diseases. In addition, the air pollution from cigarette smoke kills another 53,000 innocent non-smokers. This is half a million people who die in the United States each year. Plus, world-wide death from the diseases that result from using tobacco is approximately three million people! When you consider the facts, wouldn’t you agree that tobacco is actually the most destructive drug in all the world? Also, parents, the Great American Smokeout comes up November 20th. If you smoke, won’t you make a commitment to begin your smoke-free existence on that day? YOUR EXAMPLE is worth more than all the facts or lectures your children will ever hear. Sincerely, Rita Geisler Executive Director United Cancer Services Member Prevention Committee for LCC
