MD ARRESTS—LocaI ‘celebrities* were arrested last week to raise funds for muscular dystrophy. Among those arrested were Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson (top) and Jim Huff, of Rapsure, Nappanee. According to the arresting officers Mayor Thompson attempted to escape his captors by sneaking out the back door of his office at Thompson and Yoder Funeral Home. Luckily officers checked in on the defendant before he could flee. Thompson found more trouble following his arrest when he tried to bribe the Judge Maurey Frye and had additional fines added to his sentence. Organizing the event for MD was Tula Steinson. Eby Ford, Nappanee, housed the ‘court* and ‘jail* site. Corbett Investigations and Majestic Security served as arresting officers for the event, which raised a total of over SIO,OOO. Funds raised will enable the MD Association to assist local patients with wheelchair assistance, support groups, summer camp, clinic at Elkhart General Hospital and worldwide research. The following cases have been handled through the Nappanee City Court. David Widmoyer is the judge. Jeremy Espinoza, charged with speeding 64mph in a 45mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $94.50. Kyle Cannon, charged with speeding 63mph in a 45mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $93.50. Lori Wakley, charged with having a false or fictitious registration, paid total fine and costs of $80.50. Christopher Chupp, charged With battery, paid total fine and costs of $126.50.

Three arrested for cocaine possession October 17, 2:30p.m., Captain Mike Anglin observed three subjects using cocaine in a parking lot located in the 1000 block of East Lincoln Street, Nappanee. Anglin called for backup and with several squad cars assisting arrested Robert G. Kozecar, 26, Knox, Bruce A. Hardy, 44, Bremen, and Larry E. Konkle, 30, Warsaw. The trio face charges of possession of cocaine. The subjects were transported to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and will be held on a $3,000 bond pending a probable cause hearing. DWLS Ronald L. Summers, 42, 54 MDee Acres, Nappanee, was arrested October 15, 5:09a.m., for felony charges of driving while license suspended. His arrest came after Officer Matt Tice had been tipped off that Summers had a suspended license. A license check done prior to the arrest confirmed what the informant had told the police. Tice then set up watch of the suspect’s vehicle. During that watch, Officer Tice witnessed the accused drive off in his vehicle and immediately pulled the driver over and arrested Summers. Ronald Summers was transported to the Nappanee Police Department for initial paperwork before being transported to the Elkhart County Security Center with a $3,000 bond to await a probable cause hearing scheduled that same day. MINOR POSSESSION OCTOBER 19, 2a.m., Ptl. Terry Chanley arrested James Ryman, 19, 465 East Marion Street, Nappanee, on charges of possession of alcohol by a minor. The arrest came after Chanley observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Hartman Street and Hartman Knoll. Upon stopping the vehicle, Ptl. Chanley noticed the odor associated with alcoholic beverages coming from the vehicle. The driver, James Ryman was givfeW it portable breathalyzer test whkrh,;showed his blood alcohol count to be .08%. Ryman also submitted to a chemical breath test at the NPD station. That test showed a bac of .06%. Mr. Ryman was arrested and issued a citation for zero tolerance for operating a vehicle with a bac over .02% and being under the age of 21. Mr. Ryman signed a promise to appear in the Nappanee City Court, October 22.

Jeremy Neverman, charged with disregarding a stop sign, paid total fine and costs of $80.50. Larry Davis, charged with speeding 46mph in a 30mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $91.50. Todd Shepherd, charged with having an expired license plate, paid total fine and costs of $80.50.
