Court News... The following eases were handled through the Nappanee City Court. David Widmoyer is the judge. David Scott, charged with check deception, paid total fine and costs of $2,025.50. Aaron Williamson, charged with an expired license plate, paid total fine and costs of $80.50; also charged with driving while license is suspended, paid total fine and costs of $150.50. Hassan Asaedy, charged with speeding 55mph in a 30mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $100.50. Eldon Ralstin, charged with speeding 68mph in a 55mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $88.50. Mark Pike, charged with driving while license is suspended infraction, paid total fine and costs of $100.50. Andrew Felten, charged with disregard for stop sign, paid total • fine and costs of $80.50. Troy Martin, charged with operating, without proof of financial responsibility, paid total fine and costs of $230.50. Tuma Wooley, charged with possession of fictitious license, paid total fine and costs of $85.50; also driving while license is suspended, paid total fine and costs of $60.50; contributing to the delinquency of a minor, paid total fine and costs of $275.50; driving while license is suspended infraction, paid total fine and costs of $85.50; and possession of fictitious license, paid total fine and costs of $175.50. Vernon Chupp, charged with speeding 65mph in 55mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $150.50. Randall Pletcher, charged with speeding 51mph in a 30mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $96.50. Nellie Jones, charged with operating while intoxicated, paid total fine and costs of $575.50. Jesse Schmucker, charged with possession of tobacco by a minor, paid total fine and costs of $100.50.
Two arrested for possession of marijuana An off-duty Nappanee police officer was responsible for the arrest of two men for possession of marijuana, Wednesday, October 8, along SR 19, north of CR4O. Officer Phil Hahn, of the NPD was off duty, and followed a vehicle, observing drug activity inside the vehicle. Gregory A. Miller, 23, 1008 W. Madison St., Plymouth, driver of the car, and a passenger, Steven P. Taylor, 28, 602 Short St., Nappanee, pulled into a Wakarusa convenience store. Hahn radioed dispatch to contact Lt. Todd W. Grove of the Wakarusa Police Department. After the subjects left the store, the two officers made a traffic stop. When confronted with the officers’ information, Miller voluntarily told them he had marijuana in the vehicle. The two were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. Both bonded out of the Elkhart County Jail on SI,OOO bonds.
Warsaw woman arrested on outstanding warrants
October 9, Nappanee Police Officer Nik Havert observed a teal Geo Metro at the intersection of Jackson and Wabash Streets with an expired license plate. Havert stopped the vehicle at the comer of Wabash and Summit Streets. During a routine driver’s license check it was found that the driver, Theresa Kauffman, had two active warrants for her arrest. One was issued out of Goshen and the other from Glasgo, Kentucky. The charges included driving while license is suspended and non-pay-ment of child support. Local "jailbirds" help with MD fundraiser
Eby Auto Sales, Nappanee, is hosting the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s first annual “Lockup” fundraiser, today (Wednesday). Business persons and civic leaders have volunteered to be arrested and raise their “bail,” which will support the local patient services program and research, to find a cure for 40 neuromuscular diseases. 360 Communications has donated the use of cellular phones for the jailbirds, to call friends, family and businesses to help raise their bail. Poetry club meets at library An opportunity to share creative thought in the form of poetry will be available at the Nappanee Public Library at 7p.m. Tuesday, October 21. The Poetry Club, under the leadership of Susie Russell, meets the third Tuesday of every month. FIRE PREVENTION WEEK— Students throughout Wa-Nee Community Schools celebrated Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, with visits from the Nappanee Fire Department. Smokey Stovers visited children in kindergarten through third grade at Woodview Elementary last Wednesday. Fire Chief Don Lehman discussed fire safety tips and procedures.
