Johnson, Miller top golfers Jay Miller scored rounds of 7171 (142) to capture top honors in the championship flight of the recent Nappanee City Golf Tournament, played at McCormick Creek Golf Course. Miller, a repeat champion, also earned the top position in the 1981 event. Other flight winners were Rick Strang, 76-75 (151) in A; Troy Schwartz, 79-80 (159) in B; Dale Fink, 78-81 (159) in C and Rich Hamsher, 89-92 (181) in D. Wendy Johnson was the ladies’ division champion, firing rounds of 94-92 (186) for top low gross finisher. Dee Bricker won low net. The junior title was won by Chet Walters, at 79-82 (161), while Norm Murphy took the senior crown, at 78-85 (163). Steve and Chet Walters won the Bunky Musser father-son award with a two-day total of 317. This was the third straight year for the Walters family: Steve-Chet-Mitch, to earn the award. Tom Richmond, Sr. and Tom Richmond, Jr., finished second at 320. Penn takes wins from NW netters The North Wood varsity volleyball team fell to Penn in its opener last week, winning the first game 15-8, and losing the final two, 11-15,6-15. Colleen Miller paced the Panther serving attack with 18-18 and one ace, while Amy Zercher added 15-15 with three aces, and Jamie Gill went 10-10 with three aces. Marla Yoder was 11-18 in sets and Angela Hattery added 5-11, while Gill, Hattery, Miller and Natalie Will led in spikes, at 11-15, 8-10, 6-10 and 3-6 respectively. The four combined for 18 kills. Gill also added three blocks and two assists, while Will had a block and three assists and Hattery one block and four assists. Marla Yoder led passing with 11 digs, with Hattery adding 10 and Gill seven. The JV also fell to Penn in two games, 5-15, 12-15. Erin Newcomer, Kasey Chamberlin, Amy Hughes, Erin Newcomer, Shelly Stichter and Sarah Harter led the Panthers. Chamberlin went 7-9 and Newcomer 7-8 to lead serving, with Chamberlin adding 6-16 sets, 13-14 spikes with seven kills, a solo block and two assists. The Panthers travel to the Lakeland Invitational, Thursday, August 28, with action set to begin at sp.m.

STATE CfciAMPS-The Ag Crew, sponsored by Reliance Insurance-Maust Associates of Goshen, recently won the ASA Co-Ed Novice state championship title, with games played at Valparaiso.
