Edward Jones earns first-place picks ranking
The financial-services firm Edward Jones has been ranked No. 1 in 12-month performance, in the Wall Street Journal’s quarterly stock picks ranking. The ranking evaluates stock recommendations of 17 major brokerage firms. Jones’ 12-month performance record showed a 40.2 percent gain vs. the S&P 500 index of 34.7 percent. Investment Representative David Wood, of the Nappanee office, said that the firm’s ability to rank No. 1 in stock performance reflects its commitment to a longterm buy-and-hold investment philosophy. “We tell our customers to look for companies with long histories of steady growth and sound income. That’s been our advice and it works. This ranking supports what Edward Jones has said for years.” The study is conducted each quarter and estimates how an individual investor would fare if

They also appreciate that Edward Jones doesn’t base its recommendations on the latest hot trend,” he said.

Local family gains new insight through daughter, exchangee
By Christina Hill The John and June Ulery family, living at 1354 Penny Lane in Nappanee, are experiencing two new cultures this year: their daughter, Janette, returned from the Dominican Republic July 31, and Ayako Yoshinoya, an exchange student from Japan, recently came to stay with them. Ayako is a senior at North Wood High School this year. She lives with her mother, Yoko, and her younger sister, Naoko, in Kanaga, Japan, near Tokyo. Her father, Nobuki, passed away last fall. Ayako enjoys studying music, and plays the piano. During the 1997-98 school year, she will be playing the concert base drum and vibraphone (similar to a xylophone) in the NWHS marching band. She arrived in the United States Monday, August 4, and began attending Band Camp at the school Wednesday, August 6. She is also involved in sports, including volleyball and tennis, and will be on the girls’ tennis team in the spring. Although she has experienced a few surprises, such as wearing shoes inside the house, she is enjoying her stay in Nappanee so far, and has made a few friends. The Ulery’s older daughter, Janette, is a 1995 North Wood graduate, and a junior at Goshen College studying nursing. Asa required part of her studies, she

spent three months in the Dominican Republic, where she took culture and language courses in the capitol city of Santo Domingo. During the last six weeks of her stay, she stayed in San Pedro, where she volunteered at a daycare run by the Episcopal Church. The center is located in the free trade zone, where mothers work sewing jeans and other clothes to earn a living. Her travel group also spent three days working in a home for boys off the street, where boys work to earn money for dance classes. Janette stated that although she had seen news clips about the violence and riots going on in the Dominican Republic, “I didn’t see any of that. I just met a bunch of really nice people.” Along with other members of her travel group, Janette now sponsors a child from Haiti, an eight-year-old girl, to help pay for her schooling. Monday, August 11, Janette gave a presentation to the Nappanee Noon Kiwanis Club, which included slides and information on what her group did while they were in the Dominican Republic. The Ulerys have two other children, a daughter, Joan, who is a North Wood High School junior this year, and a son, Jason, who graduated from NWHS last spring.
