Hoosiers have new look, can they win?

BLOOMINGTON (AP) The Indiana University football team has anew coach, new helmets and anew aggressive marketing strategy that includes holding preseason practices around the state. But coach Cam Cameron, who met with reporters Friday during the program’s Media Day, believes there is only one thing that will turn the program around: Hard work. "New helmets, staging practices around the state those

sorts of things won’t do a bit of good if you’re not working hard,” Cameron said. “What has happened to this ppint, from Jan. 13 when we arrived till last night, has shown me that this is one of the hardest-working teams I’ve ever been around. “That’s one reason I’ve been encouraged. Another thing is that, in terms of front sevens on both sides of the ball, I feel we have the talent to compete with teams in this league. That means our linebackers, too.

And that goes for every school in this conference.” What Cameron doesn’t see at IU yet is big-play potential. “The difference for us right now is the big-play guy,” he said. “We don’t have the sort of kickoff-return, punt-return guys who can consistently give you field position or turn games around. “That’s the situation at wideout, too, not having those sorts of game-breakers. We don’t

have them right now. That doesn’t means we won’t have them three weeks from now.” Cameron also revealed the Hoosiers won’t have a few of the freshmen recruits who had hoped to catch' his eye during the next

three weeks of practice. De’Wayne Hogan, a tailback from Indianapolis Ben Davis, and wideout Sharrod Wallace are waiting on NCAA certification of eligibility and therefore can’t practice. Antwaan Randle El, a quarterback from Illinois, is a partial qualifier who can practice but not play this season. Levron Williams, a tailback from Evansville Bosse, will attend IU but not play this year. Kyle Enright, a fullback from Decatur Central, has a broken foot and Joe Johnson, a tight end from Michigan, has a broken leg. Jimmy Robinson, a highly regarded junior college receiver, had Georgia Military College change the status of a class this summer, rendering him ineligible for IU and the Big Ten. He ended up at Kentucky, where he is eligible. Sophomore tailback Eugene Jones and classmate Ivan Hinson, a wideout, were dismissed from the team. Redshirt-freshman tight end Matt Parker left the team. But the Hoosiers still have 12 returning starters and 44 let-

termen listed among the 104 players starting fall practice. Cameron liked the looks of them as photographs were taken at lU’s Mellencamp Pavilion indoor practice facility “These guys, I think, will arrive in great shape,” he said. “Now, let’s go out and find out who can play, who’s improved.” IU opens Sept. 6 at North Carolina, with a home opener against Ball State on Sept. 13.
