...our football preview for 1997. More athletes will take the gridiron every Friday this fall to play football than any other sport in the state of Indiana. Perhaps more than any other sport, football has become “America’s Game”. More people watch it on TV, more people play it and more people buy the products associated with it, rather than any other game that Americans entertain themselves with. Why? Perhaps more than any other game, football epitomizes the way we like to think of ourselves as a nation. In no other sport can some one with a moderate amount of God-given talent make himself a * success through hard work and sheer determination. Football and those who play it are aggressive and untamed, much as we like to think of ourselves as a nation. Endurance, and perseverance through physical pain and long odds are all attributes of the successful football player, and traits we value as

a nation. Many a schoolboy’s greatest lessons have been taught on the football field. Just ask Pete Buchanan or Bo Hundt, or any of the thousands of other young men who
saw the hard work of August conditioning practices turn into championship dreams. Asa tribute to the hours in the weight room and on the field, we highlight those who will make up this year’s version of Marshall County football. None of this happens without the local coaches, ADs and maybe ever more important than anyone, the athletic secretaries who spend endless hours scheduling, teaching the game and coordinating to make sure the games go 0n... and let’s not forget the players. Try to remember one thing as we start this school year. These individuals put in long hours to make sure
that there are sports for our young people to be involved in, and all things considered, it’s highly improbable anyone is getting rich at it. I know that a thank you from those involved
