Summer season now over, fall leagues to begin soon

By Christina Hill Staff Reporter Bob Waters, president of the Nappanee Sports Association Board of Directors, presented an update on softball league activities to the Nappanee Board of Parks and Recreation during their regular meeting, held Wednesday afternoon, August 20. Waters stated that during the summer months, the softball leagues completed 355 games, including state and semi-state tournaments which were held at the Derksen sports complex. The Nappanee Sports Association is now ready to advertise for the fall co-ed softball league, with games to be held at the Stauffer Park diamond. Letters have been sent out to coaches and managers regarding an upcoming meeting, set for 4p.m. Sunday, August 24 at the West Park Pavilion. The meeting is being held to plan for the fall season, and to hear feedback from league coaches and managers. “We keep trying to get better,” Waters stated about the sports association. “We need input from other people.” Board member John Leavitt stated that one of the park board’s goals must be to have a building constructed in the area near the Derksen softball diamonds by.the spring. Board President Sam Sheets agreed, stating that it is vital that permanent restrooms be installed there. Teams from other areas who currently use the Stauffer Park diamond are interested in playing at Derksen, but would like to see restrooms added to the complex. McCormick Creek Golf Course Director Fred Hockert submitted his monthly report to the board, which included some recommendations for improving security at .

the club house. Recently, the window in the office/storage area in the back of the club house was broken; the prospective thieves reached the lobby area before setting off an audio alarm, then fled the scene. Currently, Hockert relies on neighbors to hear the alarm and report it to the Nappanee Police. However, he suggested that the board consider a direct hookup to the police station or a security company for quicker response. A direct phone line from Sonitrol, a security company based in Elkhart, would cost $460 for installation and equipment, with a fee of S2O per month. However, due to the fact that this is the first break-in this year, and only one break-in occurred last year, board members questioned whether it was worth the cost. Other suggestions included an audio alarm (at a cost of about $100) which would be set off by glass breakage in the office/storage area, a motion detector and motion detector floodlights. The options will be considered, and prices will be brought to the next meeting for further discussion. July statistics show that an increase of 18-hole rounds at the golf course on the weekends is one of the main causes for the increase in revenue over the last year. A total of 1,392 nine-hole rounds were played in 1996, along with 1,196 18-hole rounds; this year, 942 nine-hole rounds were played, while visitors played 1,644 18hole rounds of golf. Hockert also submitted a copy of a contract for a Golf Privilege Card Membership Program in 1998 with the American Lung Association of Indiana. In return for a contribution to the ALA, card holders will be entitled to two 18hole rounds of golf at McCormick

Creek with free greens fees; the only charge will be sl4 per person for cart rental, which will be required with use of the card. Golf Course Maintenance Directory Jay Taylor presented his monthly report to the park board, stating that sand traps are all edged and ready for sand. Approximately 60 tons of sand has been spread in three of the thinnest traps so far. He also said that although the weather “has been just perfect for golfing,” they could use some rain. The past month has been the driest part of the summer, which is to be expected in August. Once again this year, Taylor is coaching the North Wood High School girls’ golf team, which is made up of eight members, all of whom are sophomores and juniors. Representing the Nappanee Civic Theatre, John Loucks requested the use of the house at Derksen Farm once again for this year’s Haunted House, adding that the group has started “thinking of new way* sis scaring the kids.” as school approaches. Park Supt. Wayne Scheumann v/ill be attending the Indiana Parks and Recreation Association (IPRA) state conference in Ft. Wayne, which i; scheduled to taxe place September 29-October 2. Upon recommendation by Mary Ebv, who has been serving as sec retary for the park board during the past year, the board lias hired Kristen Owens to take over the position for tie next year. She is a senior this year at North Wood High School. The next meeting of the Nappanee Board of Parks and Recreation will take place at 4:30p.m. Wednesday, September 10 in the meeting room of the Nappanee EMS building on W. Lincoln Street. The public is welcome to attend.
