Campaign to assist in reducing solid waste
The solid waste management district of Elkhart County is helping to kick off a state-wide campaign, coordinated by the Indiana Recycling Coalition (IRC), to assist in reducing the amount of solid waste in Indiana by 50 percent by the year 2001. The campaign, which began Wednesday, April 2, will run through Sunday, April 27. The theme for the campaign is “Indiana’s Had It Up to Here!”, with reference to the amount of waste created each year in Indiana. A series of television spots will feature Indiana personalities such as Jim Harbaugh of the Indianapolis Colts and Barbara Hobbs of the Hoosier Millionaire television show. The local solid waste management district will also assist to inform residents about simple ways to reduce the amount of waste that is generated. The media spots will offer a tollfree number, 1-800-418-8390, that citizens may call to receive additional information. Callers will be sent a self-mailer poster kit that will include material on how to reduce waste, a bumper sticker and a recycling magnet. The “Indiana’s Had It Up to Here!” campaign has five primary objectives: reducing waste at the source, reducing hazardous materials in the home, reducing yard waste trimmings, recycling, and proper disposal of waste. Timothy Neese, administrator of the solid waste management district, stated, “The campaign has a lot of potential. While the amount of waste in Indiana is a problem, the solution is a simple one. “We are committed to helping solve the problem, and enthusias-
tic about joining this state-wide effort to help demonstrate to Indiana residents how easy it is to do their part by reducing waste. We are ready to send everyone the message that “Indiana’s Had It Up to Here!”, Neese concluded. It should also be noted that the solid waste management district in Elkhart County was recently named by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management as one of the top four solid waste districts in the state, of a total of 62 districts in Indiana. Anyone interested in receiving more information on reducing waste should contact the solid waste management district at 219-293-2269, or call toll-free at 1-800-418-8390. Rotary report...
