Don't fall for 'good deal'
by Jeff Burbrink Extension Educator-Agriculture Elkhart County Every summer I hear about farmers who have been deceived by individuals selling items or services of little or no value. These sales people use high pressure tactics to take your mopey. And they won’t be there later, when you find Club notes... TOPS 425 Nappanee Tops IN. 425 met Monday morning at First Church of God, with the co-leader, Rosa Miller, presiding. The Tops song was sung, and the secretary and treasurer offered their reports. Roll call was taken, with 31 members weighing in, recording a total weight loss of 29-3/4 pounds. Five members stayed the same. The week’s best loser was Pam Martin, while Esther Borkholder won last week’s dime pot, and Violet Newcomer received the Kops dime pot. Rosa Miller presented the program on walking and exercise. Contest winners for the month of May, for Tops, are Christina Kurtz, first, and Ruth Manges, second. Kops winners were Rosa Miller, first; Helen Newcomer, second, and Janet Teghtmeyer, third. out the product or service was not quite what you thought you were getting. Typical scams that are used include painting your bam, doing simple repairs around the home or farm, and water purifying equipment. In recent years, companies calling from out of state are offering pesticides sold at “bargain basement prices.” The pesticides are typically watered down versions of products we already have available at local distributors. Often, the pesticides are not legally registered for sale in our state. High pressure is the name of the game. Typically, the sales people will say that you must accept the deal today, or you lose your chance. They may offer to take you to the bank, so the money for the transaction can be withdrawn. These salesmen tend to play on that basic instinct we all have—the desire to save a dollar. You are much better off to buy products and services from local businesses. If a local business is to be successful, they must be honest with their customers. They will not be in business very long if they do not treat you right. These fly-by-night scam artists move quickly into the area, take our money, and are gone before you realize there is a problem. If you are approached, take time to ask a lot of questions, and gather information about the company before completing any transaction. You may want to check with the Better Business Bureau or the local law enforcement, to see if any other individuals have reported problems.
