children and their families. (4) Elkhart County families with disabled children would like to be able to shop, attend church, and go to the movies, the library, or festivals like anyone else. Three local community groups, each consisting of members from two area cities (Elkhart/Goshen, Nappanee/Wakarusa, and Middlebury/Bristol), have been meeting since May of 1995. Beginning April 15, these groups will be asking all Elkhart County businesses involved with service to the public, including restaurants, retail businesses and convenience stores, to display the “Welcome Everywhere” logo they will be receiving in the mail. Displaying this logo on the door of an establishment signifies jhat the business or agency is committed to the Welcome Everywhere concept, and that all children, with or without disabilities, are welcome. The logo was designed by Fairfield High School student Stacy Miller. Her design was the winning entry in a contest held last spring among Elkhart County high schools and middle schools. Included with the logo will be a copy of the Welcome Everywhere “proclamation” (which may be framed and displayed), as follows: I. Children with disabilities and their families are welcome here. 11. Efforts will be made to enable children with disabilities and their families to participate 1 here. 111. Employees in this establishment demonstrate acceptance and flexibility with respect to welcoming children with disabilities and their families. IV. Employees here demonstrate a willingness to learn more about persons with disabilities. Janaye Schmitt, who chairs the Nappanee/Wakarusa group, has three daughters of her own, named Ashley (age seven), Katelyn (age six), and Rochelle (age four), who has been blind since birth. Marge Mishler, manager of the Book Corner, has welcomed Janaye and her family from the beginning. Mishler and her staff are very helpful and patient when the Schmitts epter the store, and will often put a children’s tape in the player, since Rochelle can’t see the books. The Schmitts enjoy shopping at
