Math students earn bonds
' North Wood students Carrie Leinbach, Matt Schrock, Matt Henkler and Calvin Moser were recipients of SSO savings bonds as a result of their competition in the second and third of several area Math League contests. Senior Andy Smith broke a fiveway tie from the second competition to win a savings bond in the third contest. Rick Purcell, owner/operator of the Nappanee McDonald’s and sponsor of the contest awards, stated, “It’s refreshing to see students competing on a scholastic level. Sometimes we put too much emphasis on the winners in sporting events. These students exemplify the real future of our county” Leinbach, daughter of Bob and

Shelley Leinback, Goshen, is a freshman at North Wood, and won contest two. Matt Schrock, also a freshman, is the son of Tom and Ruth Schrock, Nappanee, and won contest three at the freshman level. Mathew Henkler, a sophomore, tied for first in contest one, won both contests two and three. He is the son of Craig and Candy Henkler, Goshen. Calvin Moser, son of Norman and Linda Moser, Goshen, is a junior at North Wood, and won both contests. Andy Smith, son of Dan and Pam Smith, Nappanee, tied with four other seniors in contest two, and won contest three, winning a SIOO savings bond. It’s a great incentive and kids really enjoy competing.” The students compete for points in weekly problem sets distributed by the local math department, the American High School Mat Exam, and the American Invitational Math Exam. Other contestants won McDonald’s food coupons for their efforts. Purcell Food Service owns stores in Ligonier, Syracuse and Bremen, in addition to the store in Nappanee. The firm sponsors similar programs in these community schools, as well.
