LaSalle no match for varsity girls LaSalle became the fourth straight victim of the North Wood girls’ varsity basketball team, falling to the Panthers 79-25, in a contest played at North Wood, November 25. Megan Newcomer led the Panthers with a game-high 25 points, including five from threepoint range, while A.J. Whitehead and Diane Riley were also in double figures, with 12 and 10 respectively. Amy Zercher was also good on a bucket from long range, while Whitehead and Angie Gingerich led in rebounds, at six and five, and Nicci Mullet dished out six assists, with teammates Amy Sloat and Natalie Will each getting five. LaSalle dropped to 2-3 on the season.
Sixth grade teams compete Nappanee Elementary’s basketball team opened its season with a 30-26 loss to Milford, with Jesse Fink leading Nappanee with 10 points and eight rebounds. Paul Yoder and Chad Burkholder each scored four, while Dustin Shaw, Matt Unsisicker, Harry Troyer and Dustin Zentz each added two. Burkholder also grabbed 10 rebounds and Unsicker four. The B-team also fell to Milford, 28-26, with Matt Unsicker scoring six points and netting six rebounds. Zach Stovedahl added five points and 13 rebounds, while Mathew Lingofelter and Nick Homish each scored four, and Drew Canter, Josh Hochstetler, Jeff Hochstetler, each hit two and Josh Bowers one. Chris Truex added five rebounds. The A-team fell to 0-5 on the season with a Thursday loss to Wakarusa, 24-23. Fink scored 14 points and had five rebounds, Burkholder four points and seven rebounds, Dhaw and Yoder each two points iind Troyer a point. The B-team topped Wakarusa 19-17, led by Stovedahl’s six points and nine rebounds. Besson added six points and six rebounds, while Homish, Truex and Canter each added two and Hochstetler one.
Young Panthers compete in tournament The seventh and eighth grade Bteams competed in the Concord Tournaments Saturday, with eighth winning its first contest, and losing the second, while seventh won two. In the eighth opener, North Wood topped Heritage 3431, with Ryan Yoder leading the team with 12 points and five rebounds, while Andy Rummel also scored 12 and Mikel Wisler three. In the second contest, the Panthers fell to the host Minutemen, 32-28, with Joe Sabo netting 13 for the Panthers, and Ryan Yoder grabbing 12 rebounds, while Andy Rummel scored four points and dished out six assists. In the seventh opener, the Panthers slipped to Concord 3728, with balanced scoring. Eric Flickinger dumped in seven points, Eric Kaufman five points and four assists, and Justin Titus added five rebounds. In the second game, the Panthers edged Heritage 35-32, with Flickinger getting 13 points and three assists, Titus nine points, seven rebounds and five assists, Jason Meyers four points and three rebounds. North Wood played well down the stretch in a tight game, to take second place in the tournament.

Triton first Panther victim
The North Wood boys’ varsity earned its first victory of the young season Friday night, topping the host Triton Trojans, 64-48, in spite of a host of fouls and turnovers. Panther League basketball results from play of December 2 are as follows: The Bulls slipped by the Celtics 27-20, moving to 5-1 on the season, while the Celtics are 4-2. Ryan Bradley and Joey Hochstetler led the Bulls with eight points each, while Brandon Hall added three and Corey Wesley one. The Wa-Nee Waves hosted the Bremen Swim Club, Saturday, December 2, at the North Wood High School pool. The Waves recorded 19 personal bests (*), and three swimmers turned in new cut times. Dodson finished the contest with just two points, while Brown had six, but they were credited at being instrumental in controlling Triton scoring threats with solid defensive play. Panther scoring was led by Mike Keeper with 20 points, while Ryan Hattery was also in double figures with 12. Jake Klotz and Jon Metz each added six, while Matt Swihart, Jeff Wise and Jason Hill each had four. Panthers lose one, win one The freshman Panther basketball team lost to Wawasee 29-34 Thursday, November 30, moving their season record to 2-1.
