tion, and receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The Indiana Farm Bureau handles all judging at county, district and state levels. This year’s essay theme was “Farming for the Future,” which asked contestants to imagine agriculture in the year 2045. Essays were limited to 300 words, and were judged for grammar, spelling, punctuation, knowledge, originality, creativity and appearance. The following is Andy Rummel’s winning essay, titled, “Farming in the Year 2045.” “In the year 2045 farming will be mostly computerized. Everything that a farmer will do will be recorded on a computer. Robots will do some of the work in the future, but the farmer will still do most of the work. “There will be less farmers than there are now, but the farms will be much larger. One farmer mat be able to feed 250 people. Every farmer will use no-till, so they save gas and won’t pollute the air. Scientists will come up with a seed that grows faster, and produces more yields. Satellites and receivers will be able to tell the farmer where to plant to get the most crop and will also save the farmer money on chemicals. “Machinery will be built bigger and better so farmers can get their crops in faster. We will have better weather forecasts so farmers can plan ahead and not have their production adversely affected. Airplanes will spray all the fields, because of their size. Manure and fertilizer will be spread in pipes under ground, so that it doesn’t smell or leave a big mess. “There are lots of accidents that can be prevented on the farm. Safety will play an important part in the future. Dangerous machines will have body heat sensors that will shut down when a person is too close, especially augers and PTOs. Cows will give more milk; hogs will be marketed faster, because they will be fed a scientific diet that will make them do better. “Farmers should be able to look to the future with excitement with all the new technology available. If all this happens farmers will be able to spend more time with their families, which also will be important in the future.” NOW LEASING SELF STORAGE Fenced, lighted. You keep the keys.
