Local theatre group continues movie showings
Nappanee Civic Theatre is continuing its programs of “NCT Night at the Movies,” with “Flying Leathernecks” playing Friday, November 10 at 7p.m., followed by “The Shawshank Redemption at 9p.m. The first feature, which stars John Wayne, is a 1951 classic, while the late show is a 1994 film starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and nominated for seven ACademy Awards. Friday, December 15, the early show is “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation,” starring Chevy Chase, while the late show will be the ever-popular “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring Jimmy Stewart. NCT reminds patrons that, while these movies will also be on TV, the theatre showings are uncut, and have no commercials. Nappanee Civic Theatre will also sponsor a variety show for Christmas, with participants planning and rehearsing their own parts. A planning session is planned for Thursday, October 19, 7p.m., at West Park pavilion. All interested persons are invited to attend, or call Bob Walter, 219-773-5133. If NCT does not get enough involvement for this type of show, a pre-written Christmas play will be considered. The annual financial meeting, held to discuss the season's financial statements, is set for Thursday, November 16, 7p.m.. at the pavilion. prehend the amount of money it takes to stage any type of show, especially a major musical. This meeting will help to explain the many aspects of producing a show. It is an open meeting. The recent production of “Sound of Music” sold out the final two performances of the three-weekend run. It was the first time in almost 20 years since NCT has sold out a performance. Theatre members will perform “Badlands Ballyhoo” for the Nappanee Public Library’s Children's Book Week, Sunday afternoon. November 19, 3p.m. The performance is open to the public, with free admission. Stamp Club meets at library The Ben Franklin Stamp Club will meet in the Enos Borkholder Meeting Room at the Nappanee Public Library. Saturday, October 14. at 10a.m. Dr. Forest Kendall, a local collector who is responsible for organization of the club, leads discussions concerning tips for new stamp collectors. Anyone in grade three through adult, with an interest in stamp collecting and trading, is invited to attend. Participants will learn more about stamps and stamp collecting. Activities include games and prizes. The club meets the second Saturday of each month, at 10a.m., in the library.

William R. Martin June 21, 1913-Oct. 7, 1995 William R. Martin, 82, 25238 CRI3B, Goshen, died Saturday, October 7, at his home, after an illness of nine months. Born June 21, 1913, in St. Joseph County, he was the son of Elias E. and Amanda (Ramer) Martin, and a lifetime area resident. He married Ruth Martin, November 26, 1936, in Union Township, and she survives. He was a retired farmer, and member of the Old Order Mennonite Church. Also surviving are six daughters: Mrs. Walter (Erma) Martin, Mrs. William (Ada) Imhoff, and Mrs. Lester (Bertha) Newswenger, all of Wakarusa; Mrs. Ivan (Susie) Newswenger and Mrs. Harlan (Annetta) Shirk, both of Goshen, and Mrs. Elam (Suetta) Weaver, New Paris; eight sons: Harvey and Eddie, both of Nappanee; Elias and Ammon, both of Goshen; Lewis. Stevens, Pennsylvania; Kenneth, Latham, Missouri; Raymond, Bridgewater, Virginia, and Lowell, Carlisle, Pennsylvania; 107 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; five sisters: Mrs. Sam (Florence) Shirk, Narvon, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Lawrence (Anna) Martin, Mrs. William (Annette) Weaver, and Mrs. Daniel (Susie) Weaver, all of Goshen, and Mrs. Amos (Lydia) Martin, Pennsulvania, and five brothers: Mart, Goshen, and Wayne, Paul, Earl and Warren, all of Pennsylvania. A prayer service was held this morning (Wednesday), at the family home, with services following, at Yellow Creek Frame Church, and burial at Yellow Creek Cemetery. Officiating was the Home Ministry of the church. Arrangements were with Thompson & Yoder Funeral Home, Naonanee. members weighing in, recording a weight loss of 19 pounds. Deanna Chupp was the best loser for the week. Wayne D. Wyman Sept. 25, 1913-Sept. 30, 1995 Wayne D. Wyman, 82, Wakarusa, died Saturday, September 30, at Elkhart General Hospital, where he had been a patient for 10 days. He had been ill for a short time. Born September 25, 1913, in Scott Township, Kosciusko County, he had lived his lifetime in the Wakarusa and Nappanee areas. He married Evelyn V. Weldy, February 12, 1932, in Wakarusa, and she survives. Mr. Wyman was a retired farmer and milk hauler, and a recognized member of the Pure Milk Association. He was a member of the Gideons. Surviving with Mrs. Wyman are a daughter, Mrs. Keith (Roma) Anglemyer, Wakarusa; two granddaughters: Mrs. Boyd (Debra) McNally, Wakarusa, and Mrs. Kirk (Linda) Stolley, Wyomissing, Pennsylvania; three great-grand-children; a sister, Mrs- Joy Duzy, Elkhart, and two brothers; Lowell Hoffer and Marshall Hoffer, both of Nappanee. A brother, James Hoffer, preceded him in death. Dr. Duane Beals, assisted by the Rev. Dave Dyck, conducted services Tuesday morning, October 3, at Wakarusa Church, with burial at Olive Cemetery East, Wakarusa. Memorials may be made to the Wakarusa Missionary Church, or to the Gideons. County park programs set The following special programs have, been planned by the Elkhart County Park and Recreation Department, and are open to the public. Saturday, October 14 —Fall Color Leaf Printing. Turn a t-shirt or pillowcase into a colorful display of autumn’s colors during this ieaf printing workshop. Participants should bring a clean pre-washed white or light-colored t-shirt or pillowcase. All other supplies will be provided. This program will begin at 2p.m. in the Oxßow Haus Shelter in Oxßow County Park. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required, by calling the Elkhart County Parks office, 219-535-6458, by 4p.m., Thursday, October 12. Sunday, October 15 —Nature traits. Using only natural materials, wildflowers and herbs, the group will use creative powers to make wreaths, swags and arrangements. Necessary materials will be provided, but participants may want to bring gloves and extra pruning shears if you have them. The registration fee is $5, with pre-registration and pre-payment required. Kinney to compete in Ms. Plus USA pageant
By Christina Hill Staff Writer Laura Kinney, Nappanee, has beeg selected to compete in the Ms. Plus USA beauty pageant, at the Holiday Inn City Center Hotel, 300 E. Ohio, in Downtown Chicago. The pageant is scheduled to take place Sunday, December 3, 2p.m.-6p.m. Laura entered the pageant by responding to an ad in BBW (Big Beautiful Women) Magazine. She was one of 400 given the opportunity to write an essay from the question, “If you are selected Ms. Plus USA, how would you use your title to promote a positive image of plus-size women?” Kinney was one of 50 women chosen based on her essay, which was about encouraging size acceptance. She stated, “If I could just make one person in the whole world look or feel differently about large-size women, it would make everything I had ever achieved worthwhile.” Laura resides in Nappanee with her husband, Bob, and their son Robby. Bob is employed as a diesel mechanic at Beer & Slabaugh, and Laura is a room mother for her son’s first grade class, helping with things like parties, snacks and games. After her mother was diagnosed with cancer last fall, and given only a year to live, Laura went through a a period of attitude adjustment. “You can’t take things for granted,” she said. However, when her mother visited a doctor about three weeks ago, she was diagnosed as 100% cancer-free—there were no longer any active cancer cells in her system. For Kinney, competing in the pageant is “a personal goal. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but it doesn’t come up
Marijuana possession leads to local arrests
Nappanee Police Officers Hollar and Chanley were called to check on a suspicious car and occupant at Arby’s Restaurant, 1659 E. Market St., Nappanee, Tuesday, October 3. Upon arrival, officers found Ronald E. Simpson, 19, 215 E. Maple, Bremen, sitting in the passenger side of the vehicle. A small amount of marijuana was seen, and after further checking, officers located four small bags of marijuana.. Simpson was transported to the station, and arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. He was taken to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, and held on a SI,OOO bond, to await arraignment Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Nappanee City Court. Sunday, October 8, the Nappanee Police Department was dispatched to the 200 block of E. Broad St., in reference to a suspicious vehicle. When officers arrived, they again located Ronald E. Simpson, Bremen, sitting in the car. When officers approached him, they noticed a case of beer in the back seat, and it was determined that he had been drinking. He was placed under arrest, and charged with illegal consumption of alcohol. While inventorying the vehicle for impound, marijuana was found, and during the booking process, Simpson was also found to be in possession of a scheduled three drug. The additional charges of possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance were also added. Simpson was incarcerated in the Elkhart County Jail on a $4,500 bond, with a probable cause hearing Monday, Oct. 9, in Elkhart County Court. Tuesday, October 5, a vehicle ..was stopped for a traffic violation on US6, just east of Nappanee. The driver was identified as Ronnie E. Lard, age 44, 518 Reddick, Mishawaka.

The pageant will be separated into three divisions according to size, with one winner for each division, and one overall winner. The overall winner will receive a Bahamas cruise for two, SI,OOO cash, cosmetics, gift certificates, trophies and a fashion wardrobe; division winners will also receive prizes. Expert guests will include Susan Jirovec-Georget, of the Wilhelmina Model Agency, New York, NY; Leslie Dumin, of the SMLA Model Agency, Los Angeles, California and Thomas Dover of the Ford Model Agency, three of the top agencies in the U.S. Pageant tickets are sls for adults and $7 for children age 512; tickets will be sold at the door. After the initial investigation, Lard was found to have marijuana in his possession, and was then charged with possession of marijuana. Lard was transported to the Elkhart County Security Center, where he was held on a SI,OOO bond, pending a court date of Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Nappanee City Court. DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE Sunday morning, October 8, officers were called to 700 N. Williams St:, to a domestic fight in progress. Upon arrival, evidence was found that a domestic battery had occurred. Michal S. Fahlbeck, 37, was placed into custody, with a charge of domestic battery. While being placed into custody, Fahlbeck began to resist officers, and a charge of resisting law enforcement was added. Fahlbeck was held on a $2,000 bond at the Elkhart County Jail, pending a court date of Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Nappanee City Court. ILLEGAL CONSUMPTION After stopping a truck for a loud music complaint on October 5, at 11p.m., officers Chanley and Hartzler, of the Nappanee Police Dept., found that the driver and his two passengers had been drinking. Since none of the truck occupants were 21, all three were taken into custody, and charged with illegal consumption. Arrested were Jose Castillo, 19, 162 Meadows, Nappanee; Emisto Mendea, 20, Goshen, and Hugo Rivera, 18, also of Goshen. All three were held on a SSOO bond, and a court date of October 11, Nappanee City Court, was set. HABITUAL OFFENDER Officers Phil Hahn II stopped Albert L. Nickerson, 44, October 5, at 6:08p.m. Nickerson was driving a red 1986 Renault in the 300 block of E. Walnut St., and the car had a loud exhaust. During the traffic stop, it was found that Nickerson’s driver’s license was suspended due to his being charged as a “Habitual Traffic Violator.” He was placed into custody, and taken to the Elkhart County Security Center, with a bond of $3,000.
