County receives grant

An announcement made by the solid waste management district of Elkhart County stated that they have been awarded a grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management totaling $17,000. The grant comes from funding available through the Indiana Recycling Grants Program, in the Jump Start category. The grant will allow the district to spend up to $ 17,000, and is issued on a basis of reimbursement. “Two thousand dollars of the grant will go toward promotion and education, on behalf of the proper disposal of household hazardous waste,” said Timothy Neese, administrator of the district. Although plans are yet to be Finalized, the remaining $15,000 will tentatively be used for a television/radio media campaign which, over a three- to four-month period, will concentrate on business and industrial recyclers, promoting recycling and waste reduction, in addition to success stories conveyed by Elkhart County businesses regarding recycling. The media campaign will concentrate on a cross section of the work force throughout the county, including individuals from the white and blue collar ranks. This is largely due to the industrial wastestream in Elkhart County, which is approximately 68% —more than twice that of the industrial figure for the entire state,” said Neese.
