Judges for the Bakeoff were Mary Ann Lienhart-Cross, Elkhart County Extension Educator, and Sandy Scheumann, Jimtown Home Economics teacher. Mrs. Yoder wishes to thank all who participated, and those who worked, including Gloria Mason, Noma Miller, Jan Tobias and Kate Malcom, and announce that the 1996 Bakeoff Chairperson will be Gloria Mason. Yoder stated, “1 wish to thank all who have helped with the bakeoff during the time I have served as chairperson.” FRESH APPLE SPICE CAKE —Linda Thompson. Ingredients: one cup oil. two cups sugar, three eggs, one teaspoon each of soda, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, one cup chopped pecans, and three cups chopped apples.

Cream oil and sugar, add one egg at a time, and beat well. Combine flour, soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg, and add to sugar mixture. Stir in vanilla, apples and nuts. Pour into greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour and 15 minutes. Remove from oven, and with toothpick, punch several holes in cake while still hot. Spoon glaze over cake. Cool completely, and remove from pan. Glaze: one-half cup sugar, onefourth teaspoon soda, one and onehalf teaspoon vanilla, one-fourth cup buttermilk, two tablespoons oleo. Combine all ingredients in medium saucepan, bring to boil, and boil for four minutes, stirring occasionally. APPLE BUTTER PIZZA— Larry Thompson. Ingredients: one refrigerated pizza dough, apple butter, blend of mozzarella, munster and monteray jack cheese. Roll out pizza dough according to package. Bake for six minutes, until just starts to brown. Spread Kids earn aedal pull ~ionors The Nappanee Apple Festival Pedal Pull took place Saturday, September 23, at the Nappanee Elementary School. Winners in the various age groups are as follows: Ages 3-4 —Allie Heeter, Nappanee, first; Cam Spitaels, Nappanee, second; Grant Ruch, Milford, third; Kelcie Lehman, Nappanee, fourth. Ages 5-6 —Matt Patton, Elkhart, first; Brady Shively, Nappanee, second; Joshua Stump, Nappanee, third; Travis Beer, Nappanee, fourth. Carmen S. Conelley, charged with speeding 42mph in a 25mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $80.50. Russell F. Graduates from Ball State Several Elkhart County residents were among those recently graduating from Ball State University. Among them was Tong Inthivong, Wakarusa, who earned a bachelor of fine arts. Since 1994, over 10 million tabs have been received (over 8800 pounds), generating $6,000 for the House. McDonald’s Restaurants throughout Indiana are joining the program by collecting tabs, and forwarding them to the recycling centers. Tabs may be dropped off at local McDonald’s Restaurants.

Junior Friends meet at library

Cleveland assumes state police post
Timothy E. Cleveland, Howe, formerly of Nappanee, recently graduated from the Indiana State Police Academy, and the Indiana Excise Commission. He is now serving as an Indiana State Excise
promoting the library and conducting fundraising activities. They will also share ideas on selecting materials and planning programs of special interest to teens. Refreshments will be provided by van Camps.
