100 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 11. 1895 Edward Leinhart, a school teacher, has filed suit against Olive township and asks damages in the sum of S3OO.
He alleges, in substance, that on Dec. 3rd, 1894, he contracted with ex-Trustee Jacob Dell to teach school for a term of 7-1/2 months at $37.50 per month, and immediately entered upon his duties: that during the early part of 1895, before the term was completed, the trustee closed the school and dismissed the plaintiff, although he was •ready and requested to be allowed tcKramplete the term. It will be remembered that on May 21st last, J. M, Keller and Cash McCloud were riding their wheels south of town in Kosciusko county, when he was attacked on the highway by a vicious dog, and after repeated attempts of escape, he shot the dog. For this he was arrested on the charges of carrying a concealed weapon and for willfully and maliciously shooting the dog. Mr. Keller beat them on the point of carrying concealed weapons, being an agent traveling through the country, often carrying money. He was convicted on the other charge and fined $42.65. The ’ case was immediately appealed. It only took the jury a few minutes to acquit Mr. Keller. He feels that his money was well spent in defending the rights of a citizen on the highway. Bully for Mr. Keller! 75 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 16. 1920 NO SEPARATE BALLOT BOXES FOR VOTERS: Plans for separate ballot boxes for men and women voters have been abandoned by the state board of elections. Now that the federal amendment gives women the right to vote for all candidates, it will not be necessary to separate the ballots.
