The marshal was instructed to allow no more cows tethered on the streets. It was made an order that the street sprinkler furnish a crane from which to take water from the mains instead ot the use of the fire plugs. Last Sunday night, someone gained entrance to Mrs. Knappenberger's millinery store by removing a screen from a window. The would-be thief must have become alarmed and fled as nothing was missing. Two weeks ago on a Sunday night, someone cut the screen in a door at Stoops' Restaurant and unhooked it. Nothing was missed, and the thieves must have been frightened away there also.
James Compton, recently given a fine and jail sentence for sheep stealing, was Thursday arrested by Elkhart officers for stealing a horse and buggy, which he then sold in Michigan for S2O. The school board has begun to make a much-needed improvement at the public school building by putting in a hot water system of heating. Heretofore, pupils have been crowded around the old stoves. A recitation room will be constructed out of one of the large halls. 75 YEARS AGO JULY 8. 1920 On the 44th roll call, Gov. James M. Cox, governor of Ohio, was nominated democratic candidate for president of the United States at San Francisco, Tuesday. Francis Parks, of Cleveland, a former Nappanee Young man. is visiting with his former class mates and friends this week. Mr. Parks is a cartoonist employed by the Newspaper Enterprise Association of Cleveland, and had the honor of being assigned to the Republican Convention at Chicago"' and the Democratic Convention at San Francisco. Mr. Parks' cartoons of the noted men of both conventions have appeared in numerous dailies, and are very clever. According to the consensus of opinion, the picnic held by the First Brethren Sunday-School and church in the Jesse Price woods northeast of town was by far the best occasion of the kind yet enjoyed by the members of those organizations. NOT SO LONG AGO—The halls of the former Central Elementary School building are silent now, with newer, more modern facilities taking the place of the building which saw perhaps thousands of students pass through the halls, as elementary, junior high and even high school scholars. Arthur Schwartz is now somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean, on a ship bound for Yugoslavia, with a load of horses, sent through the United National Relief and Rehabilitation Association of the Church of the Brethren. Earl Holderman is also on his overseas, being on the steamship Virginian, operated by the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company. He left Baltimore on June 25, headed for Greece. The ship carried 704 head of horses and cattle sent by the United National Relief Association. He expects to be gone for at least two months. Earl attended Manchester College last year, and expects to be back in time to enter there again in September. Members of the organization of Mothers of WWII met on Tuesday evening, at the Legion Home. Gifts for the canteen were given, and a program of music and papers was given. 20 YEARS AGO JULY 3, 1975 Nappanee Theatre owner Robert Murphy holds free kids show to express his appreciation for their business. LAST YEAR JULY 6, 1994 Former local police officer, Phil Hochstetler, Jr., 32, shot and killed in Warsaw. Was detective sergeant with Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department. Local pastor, Dale Ziegler, of Union Center Church of Brethren, killed in traffic accident in Quincey, Illinois, on way to church conference. 40th wedding anniversary celebration for Joe and Fran Stouder.
