Building a better community... Persing captures spirit of giving
By Merrie Chapman Reporter What is the recipe for staying young? For one on-the-go woman in Nappanee, it includes a partnership in business with her husband, three active children, and perhaps an overflowing cup of dedication to her community. Add a dash of service to the Psi lota Xi Sorority, and season with an ever-present faith which goes a long way to insuring success in any undertaking, and you have her. Donna Persing is on the go constantly—supporting herbpsband, Rick, in their business, Persing & Company; following their children through a myriad of school and social activities, and adding her own involvement in everything from loqal Red Cross blood drives to service with the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce, and scorekeeping North Wood swim meets. And the list goes on. By day Donna works alongside her husband, Rick, at the familyowned business that first brought them to the Nappanee community. Persing and Company manufactures pipe supports, hangers and sway bracing used for automatic sprinkler systems in the fire protection industry. The couple met at Mt. Vernon Nazarene College, Ohio, and moved to their Indiana location in 1975. Donna’s father-in-law started the Nappanee business and turned it over to the capable of hands of his son who is now president of the company. After hours Donna is off and running to North Wood High School to watch 17-year-old Tami, 15-year-old Shawn and 10-year-old Brea during swim meets while she serves as both announcer and scorer. During the off-season Persing is supporting Tami as she alternates hats from an actress in the high school drama performances, to trackster, or junior varsity captain of the science academic team. The young Lady Persing also participates in Dawning Generation. Her mother chaperones the annual trips to Watseka, Illinois. Fall is spent tracking Shawn through his soccer season. His winter swimming competitions give way to participation on North Wood’s golf team each summer. Donna says her high level of availability to her children as supporter and taxi service “is a way to share in their lives and keep up communication with them.” “It’s real important to stay involved in what your kids are doing,” she adds. In addition, to all of their sports activities, the Persing children join their parents as active members of the Nappanee Missionary Church. Donna is on the Missions Board and is a junior high youth sponsor. The second commitment leads her to area churches as she coaches her children and their peers during Teen Bible Quizzes. Persing also sings in the church choir. The family has attended the Missionary Church since 1982. According to Donna, a strong Christian base is the foundation of her family and the bond that keeps them all so close to one another. Outside of her business, family and church ties, Persing devotes endless hours to programs sponsored by Psi lota Xi. She is currently serving her second year as state treasurer for the sorority, and will run for the office of project

STRONG SUPPORTER—Donna Persing is a strong supporter of community service who sets an example with her own life. She is available to her children during their activities throughout the various sports seasons, coaches them during Bible Quizzes and other church activities, supports her husband each day at their family-owned business, and still finds time to organize blood drives and other important community events. Her dedication to helping others seems endless. See related article for more details about this very active, community-minded woman. (AN photo by Merrie Chapman)
chairman during elections in April. That position will allow her to coordinate funds from the state projects. Donna accepted a membership with the sorority because she believes in the causes they support. “It is a worthwhile organization,” she says. Programs center around speech and hearing. The local chapter of Psi lota Jg has sponsored hearing tests for nursery school students throughout the area. They have also provided art supplies for local camps, donated oil paintings to each of the schools in the Wa-Nee system (and Nappanee city buildings), and purchased computers for the speech and hearing classes at Woodview Elementary. Donna Persing has played a major role in organizing each of these events. Members support the activities with annual fundraisers such as the “House of Holly,” held each November. The silent auction offers guests an opportunity to browse through an entire house of Christmas decorations. Items are sold to the highest bidder. Persing is eager to roll up her sleeves each year and help with the “House of Holly” project. Her description of all the splendor is very convincing—even when she tells of the special homemade cheeseballs sold during the fundraiser. Donna and her sorority sisters also sell geraniums each May. Proceeds afe donated to Riley Hospital, Indianapolis, to help fund ear implants and further research, as well as pay for scholarships to send children to Camp Millhouse, South Bend. ues as Donna organizes two blood drives in the Nappanee area each year. She served as co-chairman of the events, under the direction of Betty Fervida, for two years and before coordinating the events on her own. This is Persing’s second year as chairman of the blood ves.She is treasurer of the Nappanee Ar,ea Chamber of Commerce and has served on its board since 1993!. Persing and Company has been a member of the Chamber since they first came to the community. “I have a desire to serve others,” says Donna. Persing’s drive is obvious to all who witness her hard work behind the scenes as she prepares for any number of fundraisers or other special projects for her sorority, church or children’s projects. Many thanks to Donna Persing for all the people whose lives were saved by blood donations from her drives, or touched by her work throughout the community. NWMS students take SAT A total of 29 eighth grade students in the North Wood Middle School qualified to take the SAT, held in January for high school students. In order to qualify, the eighth graders had to score in the 95th percentile or above on the last achievement (ISTEP) test. Of those who qualified, seven signed up to take the test, with four actually following through with the procedure. Students receive their scores and get comparisons to see how they rank with other students, both in eighth grade and in high school. Those who took the test at North Wood included David Berger, Steve Corbin, Jessica Hochstetler and Matt Schrock.
